New Years Resolutions for Your Business in 2010

We already discussed the importance of setting goals. Now, let’s talk about making realistic New Years Resolutions for your Business in 2010.

It is pretty much a staple that with the coming of each new year, resolutions must follow. We have this innate need to be better and do better. Because of this, when a new year arrives, we want to try harder and plan for success…again. However, what is the point of resolutions if one does not keep them? I say, no point at all!

2010 is special. It is a new year and a new decade. We have an opportunity to grow as business owners and achieve a new kind of success in an ever changing world.

How can a business set resolutions? Simple. Sit down. Take a long hard look at how your business is doing and what areas can use improvement. Set goals. Change. Do. Follow though!

Ten Resolutions for Any Business in 2010

  • Better Customer Service. If a business lacks good customer service, they are doomed to failure. The customer is the most important aspect of any business.
  • Budget. Every business needs a budget. If setting a budget sounds scary or is not something your business has, I encourage you to sit down with an accountant or someone who has money knowledge. Set a realistic budget and resolve to follow through with it. How the money is spent will affect the ability to promote, grow and provide for the business. Have a clear money resolution. Stick to it.
  • Competitive Pricing. When setting prices for services and products make sure they are not the lowest or highest. It is important for the overall market that pricing is competitive. It there are businesses offering lower than reasonable pricing, they are not helping the over all market for the business they represent. It should not be the goal to crush competition. There are many customers out there and plenty of business to go around. Be competitive. However, do not ruin the market.
  • Marketing. There must be a doable plan to get the word out about your product or service. Think about what forms of advertising and PR you will use. Include marketing in the businesses budget.
  • Use the Internet. Having a website and/or blog is a vital ingredient in the technology crazed world we are in. Find a good web designer and create a web presence for your business. Getting on the web will give the business more opportunities for growth. If your business already has a website, consider freshening it up!
  • Stick with One Niche. Focus on what your business offers. When a client sees your product or service, they should have a clear understanding of what you offer and what your company is all about. Stick to what works.
  • Social Networking. Some people say this is a new form of promoting a business. However, I disagree. Social networking has been around since business began. Think about it. Word of mouth has always been a great way to get the word out about a product or service. The only thing that has changed is the method. It is better in today’s world because of the powerful Internet.
  • Plan for Success. Growth should be the goal of all businesses. Think big and dream bigger. Never limit the possibilities. PLAN for success. Do what it takes to make a mark for your business. Keep a positive focus and clear strategies for how you can make success a reality for your business.
  • New Products and Services. Consider adding new products and/or services that are still within the main niche of what your business has to offer. Set your business apart. Also, plan the year for specials. Use holidays and seasons to help create special promotions and freebies with purchases. It is always a good thing when a business has a special promotion. Doing this will keep customers coming back for more.
  • Stay in Touch. Create a customer list. Send them postcards or emails to inform them of current sales. Use lists to stay in touch with customers and help find new ones. Offer them a special discount on their birthday. Be personal. It is always nice to be personal with a customer. It makes them feel special and sets your business apart from others.

These ten 2010 New Years Resolutions are useful for any Business. Use them to help your business start the new decade off right!

Here’s to your success in 2010…and beyond!

Starting Your Own Home Business

By: Terri Seymour

OK, so you have researched the facts, weighed the pros and cons and have finally decided that a home business is right for you. But now you need to figure out what type of business you want and how to proceed with marketing this business.

There are many types of home businesses but not all of them are right for all people. You need to ask yourself these questions: Do I want to start my own business from scratch? Do I just want to join an MLM and sell for someone else? Do I want to sell physical products or digital products? Do I want to do all the work online or offline too? Do I want help with my business or do I want to go solo? Do I just want to become an affiliate and sell other people’s online products?

MLM/Direct Sales – The company you sell for is in control of how you run your business. You are paid a commission for sales and usually have to recruit a downline.

Distributorship –
You are in control of your own business. You keep all profits and do not need to recruit a downline.

Digital Products -
Selling digital products such as ebooks is done online and there is no need for an inventory, shipping or worrying about damaged goods.

Affiliate Programs -
many people make a good online income just by selling other people’s products.

Service Provider -
This would include such things as virtual assistant, party planner, pet sitter, etc.

These types of businesses can be combined to form one very successful business. Such as applying for a distributorship and then also offering ebooks on your online store site.

Once you have chosen your business and gotten all your permits, tax numbers, etc, you will need to start marketing your new business. There are countless ways to do this online and offline.

Offline Marketing

Offline marketing would include: business cards, flyers, attending your community events and networking, attending expos, craft fairs, trade shows, postcards, phone calls, newsletter advertising, door hangers, radio, fundraisers, school functions, catalog distribution, mailing lists, home parties, car magnets, brochures, seminars, yellow pages and more. Use your creativity to come up with your own unique marketing ideas.

Online Marketing

Marketing strategies online include: link exchanges, search engines, autoresponders, online auctions, email press release, online chats/seminars, ebooks, blogging, tutorials, ad swapping, ezine publishing, article marketing and much more!

To market your home business takes a lot of work, consistency, time and commitment. Handing out a couple business cards and throwing up a website will not suffice. Work as many as these marketing ideas as you can. Find out which ones really work for you and then expand on them. Then try more!

I want to make sure you understand that you cannot treat your business as a hobby. If you want a successful business with a full time income, you have to work your business full time. If you find one of these programs that claim you can make thousands a week for 5 minutes of work, (that actually work) please let me know. In the meantime, start using some of these ideas and get your business name out there!

Create a Million Dollar Ebay Home Business: Today

By: Collier Harper

Are you tired of hitting the clock everyday for money? You get up early every morning, fight traffic, and listen to a bunch of annoying people every day who don’t give a damn about you. Do you have to endure your bosses’ bad jokes, and stomach your co workers stupid comments, all the while listening to a bunch of other people who are far less intelligent then you? Do you have to then fight traffic all the way back home until you are too tired to spend times with your children, friends, or spouse? The truth is that you don’t have to. If you are reading this for leisure then stop now. This article was not written for the casual reader. It was written for people who want to get out of the situation that they are in and start making something of themselves. If you want to improve your life greatly then proceed.

If you are the average working Joe or Jane, but possess more than average working drive or intelligence, then maybe you should start your own home business. Easier said than done right? You need a business plan, capital, merchandise, and a steady stream of customers. It sounds like a very daunting task to some. If it does not then you are already on the fast track to success. Fortunately this article will give you access to all of those. So there is no thinking required here. Just follow the steps and you will start raking in massive amounts of cash faster than you can say “Powerball millionaire.”

Billions of dollars are made every week in the Sports shoe industry every week on Ebay. Get in there and grab some of the money by signing up for an account. Once you have an Ebay account you need to sign up as a seller. Having an Ebay account is always an easy way to find buyers for not only Air Jordan shoes, but anything. Once your account is set up you should post items for sale regularly. You need to take pictures of the shoes your selling. It’s best if you use a digital camera. Do not just find pictures on the internet and use them in your auctions. Your auction might get canceled and Ebay may go so far as to suspend your account. If you sell two pairs of shoes a day you will be making at least $100 extra dollars every day. It only takes 5 minutes to set up an Ebay auction. It’s easy to see how the reward is far greater then the work you have to put in on Ebay.

Ebay is one way to sell things but you need alternate means. Never depend on one medium. Another medium just as powerful as Ebay is Craigslist.org. Craigslist is the largest online classifieds site in the world. The best thing about Craigslist is that it is free to post ads. You can post ads for just about anything. It’s really easy to post an ad in Craigslist. You go to the “For Sale” section. Click on the clothing section. In the upper right hand corner they will be a post button. Click on it and follow the instructions. Once you’ve completed your post you will have to go to your email and confirm the ad. Just go to your email, find the email from Craigslist and click on the link. It’s that simple. You will be getting emails from interested customers in no time.

Save every email that you get from Craigslist and Ebay. Those emails are gold. They are all potential customers. By saving them you are building a mailing list. Email the people whose addresses you have collected once a week with new shoes you have for sale. You will be surprised how many dollars you can generate out of a simple email.
Just remember that through email, Craigslist, and EBay success is only a matter of time off. Those are some of the most powerful weapons in internet marketing today. Just take your time and be diligent. You will reap the rewards of success if you follow the steps outlined in this paper.

Are you Ready for a Vacation?

By: Kara Kelso & Anita DeFrank

While this may seem like the perfect title for an ad, this is really an important business topic! There’s much to do before going on vacation, and your business needs to be ready.

We all need a break sometimes. Running a home business is hard work, no doubt about that. If you are planning your family vacation, don’t forget to make sure your business and customers are taken care of while you are gone!

- Notify friends and communities
Be sure to let all your groups and communities know you will be gone for a set amount of time. Email your closest associates to let them know when you are leaving and when you will be back. You never know if someone will be looking for you, so you’ll want to have a few that can say “she’ll be back on this date”. If you help moderate any message boards, communities etc, make sure you let the board owner know you will be gone.

- Put groups on “No Mail”
Make sure all your groups are set to no mail or daily digest, so you aren’t overwhelmed when you return.

- Notify team members
Be absolutely sure you let your team members know you’ll be gone until a certain date. Give them back up emails and phone numbers to call in case they need immediate help. You may consider asking your upline or a trustworthy (knowledgeable and active) downline member to help with some basic questions for you.

- Notify customers
If you have a personal website, edit your home page to mention you are on vacation. You can still take orders while you are gone, but if you ship them out yourself, make sure they know the order won’t be filled until you return.

- Have back ups

If there is someone who can take over some of your duties while you are gone, contact them before you leave. Make sure they have access to certain email addresses and websites.

- Do NOT put your email on auto reply!
Many do this and it’s not a bad idea, although it’s extremely annoying for those who already know or don’t care. Auto replies go to everyone who sends you an email, including newsletter owners, groups, etc. You could be doing more harm than good with auto replies!

These are some of the basics of taking care of business while you are on vacation. The most important thing to remember is not to worry – remember, you are on vacation to RELAX!

Have fun!

Time Management in your Home Business

By: Andrew Jones

One of the most valuable resources in your online home business is time. We each get the same amount of time each day, but it’s what we do with that time that is so very important. You can spend that time on frivolous tasks and “whittle” away the hours or, focus your time and energy on tasks that will grow your business and bring you closer to your goals. Especially working from home, it’s too easy to be lazy and waste your time.

Now something that I have just started applying recently and that has worked wonders for me is 8″ x 5″ Systems Cards. I saw this tip in a forum awhile ago (can’t remember who that was to give them credit) but basically you write down everything that needs to be done on these cards. So simple and yet so powerful. This is easier and more immediate to be able to write things down as they occur to you rather than typing things into your computer.

So how do we work this? Well basically, whatever your goals or special projects are, you write down this goal/project at the very top of the card. This is the “Big Picture”. Then you “chunk” this down into detailed tasks and place a small checkbox beside each task. Then all you have to do is get to work, complete each of the detailed tasks on the list and tick each item as it’s completed. Once you have completed all the tasks, the “puzzle” is finished and your goal (big picture) has been achieved automatically.

Now, you may be wondering, “what’s so special about this?” The point is that this is so dead easy and yet if you actually do it there is so much clarity about what has to be done, how it is to be done and your target remains in your sights the whole time.

Ok, so what if you have many projects on the go or some big projects to complete? My recommendation is to allocate a certain amount of time each day, whether that’s 8 hours, 4 hours or whatever, that will be up to you to decide. Then break that down into one hour chunks and no matter what, just do that one hour of work on that project and then move onto the next project and do one hour on that, and so on. You will be amazed at how much work you get done and after a few days you will look back and marvel at the number of projects you have completed.

I have a number of different cards for different things. I have a separate card for each project or goal that I want to complete; a card for article topics that I keep with me at all times so that any ideas that occur to me, I can write it down immediately; a card with my marketing plan on it; and a separate card for each day of the week. Each day will have routine tasks that are performed every day such as, check emails and reply to any queries, forum time, traffic exchanges, checking stats, blogging and project/goals. Make sure that you allocate a certain amount of time for each item and tick them off as you complete so that you are accountable.

And then you will have certain tasks that are completed, say once a week. Such as, write and submit an article, check all your links are active, check your subscriber lists, and research, (example for adwords or adsense). Note: just make sure that it is research and not aimless surfing. You can allocate each of these tasks to a different day of the week on the daily cards. Finally, there will be tasks that are done on a monthly basis such as, submitting your link to the directories, tweaking web pages or sales copy, and planning your time. Have these on a separate card and tick off and date each item as it is completed.

The last card that I have is an “ideas list”. Any ideas that I have at any time, I write it down straight away, no matter how crazy or stupid the idea sounds. This card (and the other cards) has the effect of actually freeing up my mind and my time so that whatever I’m doing in that hour, I can focus 100% in the moment and stop worrying about other things that have to be done. I’m more effective and less stressed than ever before.

Now, it seems like a lot of work to set-up these cards but once you do, and get into the routine of using them, it’s actually far less work than not using them. The added bonus is that you are more effective in your home business and get a lot more completed and achieved. As with everything, consistency is the name of the game.

Essential First Step For Internet Home Business Success

By: Sarah Smith

There are free software programs that anyone can access and use to find this information. Good Keywords is one such program. I would go so far as to say I wouldn’t even go any further with your Internet home business plans until you have explored the information waiting for you at Good Keywords.

Why am I so obsessed with this piece of free software? Firstly I have a passion for free effective Internet business tools. I believe that the average person on the street can succeed in creating a successful Internet home business if they become aware of the right way to go about it. This isn’t to say that there is only one right way. I’m just pointing out that if you have very limited financial resources it should not stop you succeeding in business on the Internet.

Good Keywords will instantly provide you with extremely important pieces of information. The first thing you need to consider when starting your new business is the product or service you will be promoting. You need to know that there is an actual market on the Internet for the product or service you have in mind. You may be in for a shock but you need to be fully aware of supply and demand before you go any further.

For this article I will use the example of home made soap.

You’ve been invloved with making your own soap for a while now. It started as a bit of an interest then it became your hobby. It’s lovely on the skin and made of all natural ingredients. It smells great. It looks great. You’ve been giving it to friends and family as birthday presents but you now have too much of it.You made a beautiful packaging for it. The local gift shop has agreed to sell your excess stock. You live in a small town and there aren’t that many tourists coming through a lot of the time. You sell a few bars to locals. Sales are steady but you’d really love to hit the big time. You decide to look at the Internet as a vehicle to sell your product.

You download your Good Keywords free software and type in the words home made soap. To your shock you find on Overture US only 199 people typed in these words.

You use this information to do a quick search in one of the popular search engines. You type in the search words home made soap and to your horror you find there are 20,600,00 websites that will be competing with you for the top places for these search words. How on earth is any one of those 199 people going to find you amongst all those sites?

Good Keywords will also give you a lot of related words that you can consider.

For example 5,609 people in the last month searched for natural soap. Your search engine search tells you there are 22,400,000 sites for this search term. Even so you already know that your chances of having someone find your site look a bit better if you choose the keywords natural soap instead of home made soap.

These are still massive numbers. You may even be starting to think the situation is hopeless. It may or may not be. You may be starting to think about selling other things to do with soap.

You type in soap making as your key word and you find 16,237 people searched for this last month. Your search engine check shows you there are 46,100,000 sites. These are still huge numbers but they appear on the surface to be getting better. At least the number of people searching for your keywords is improving.

You try the keyword soap making supply. This reveals to you that 3,518 people searched for this term. Your search engine results confirm a massive 11,700,000 sites are present.

You will need to use your imagination and continue your research at this stage.

Lets say you have decided on your 3 top keywords. You have decided to go with soap making, natural soap and soap making supplies. You have had a bit of a rethink about the kind of business you‘ll be and you’ve decided you will sell your own lovely soaps and be a supplier of things people will want to buy to make their own soap.

It really doesn’t matter what your product or service is you still need to be informed about basics of supply and demand. The selection of your keywords is a very important task. These words will form the basis of your future domain name and the name you choose for your website. Do not underestimate the importance of this first step.

This is only the beginning of your journey but at least you are starting your business on the right foot. Your eyes are open and you haven’t wasted any money. You are fully aware that the competition is huge. You are either going to give up at this point or get excited and take up the challenge of creating your very own successful Internet home business.

About the Author: I am a successful affiliate marketer, publisher and coach helping work at home moms to discover real ways to make money online. In this quest, I have created a number of websites that include resources for starting and managing a home based business and ways to advertise it free. I strive to provide programs that provide clear information and educational material for those desiring home business success.

Start a Home Business Writing…

If you like to write and want to start a home business, or at the very least make a few bucks, writing may be the way to go. There is a VERY high demand for writers online. Website owners are looking for fresh content. They NEED it. Even those who write most of their own content look for fresh content. It is also a great way to help those who are selling a product or service. They need a good sales copy to promote their products and services.

3 main ways to earn money writing online

One: Freelance writing.

As a freelance writer, you will receive credit for your work. (If you have website or online business, submitting articles to places like ezinearticles.com can be a great way to add incoming links to your site or blog.) Depending on the size of the website you are writing for, the pay for freelancers may be small, or even non-existent. The exposure for your name and business may be all you get for your work. However, a good name is a great beginning to a lucrative and successful writing career.

Two: Ghostwriting.

Website owners hire ghostwriters to write articles for their website or blog, as well as special reports and eBooks that they sell or give away. The downside to this is that when someone ghostwrites an article for someone, they do not receive credit for it. Hence the term “ghost” in the name; the writer is invisible. The person paying for the work will receive the credit for it. This may not be a good thing for someone trying to build a good name for themselves in the writing industry.

On a good note, ghostwriters generally get paid very well for their efforts. The amount will vary from client to client. A beginning ghostwriter can expect to earn anywhere from $7 – $10 for a 450 to 500 word article. Once the writer has established their self and has a few regular clients, they can start charging more.

Three: CopyWriting.

Copy writing is a high paying form of writing. It is also the most specialized form of writing. Generally speaking, ghostwriters and freelance writers do not need any special skills other than being good writers. A copywriter however, needs to have a way with words and sales skills.

A copywriter can find work online writing advertisements and sales letters for the various websites and products found online. A copywriter will write this information in a way that makes the reader feel they cannot live without a certain product or service.

In closing, using a tool such as Writers Market and networking with other writers in forums will help you to find places that hire writers and you will gain knowledge to help you become more successful at your craft. There are also tons of freelance sites out there with job boards to help you find writing work. Once you get a good name for yourself, you may find people coming directly to you in hopes that you can complete a project for them.

Tips To Help You Make the Right Decision in Choosing Your Business

Do what you know. If you have spent twenty years writing and editing or you love to draw or design, consider how you can take your experience and turn it into a successful business.

Do what you love. This is very important. Success will be hard to find if you detest what you’re doing. Many people start a business to get rich and this is the wrong reason. You may get rich running your own business but if you’re not enjoying what you do then you’ve created an empire of your own suffering.

It’s Okay to do what others are doing. You need to just make sure that you do it better. You don’t’ have to come up with a new idea to be successful. Many businesses, even successful ones, need improvement. Consider what you want to do, evaluate your competition. Then, take the time to research and investigate what you can do differently and better than they do. Maybe you want to own an online store that sells scrapbook layouts. Well there a numerous stores that do that already. Is there a market that you can focus on? A niche? Maybe you can sell scrapbook layouts on a particular subject.

Focus on a niche. Never try to reinvent the wheel just market it to a specialized market. Many businesses have gone broke trying to be all things to all people. Try to identify a niche (one or two areas) that you would enjoy working in and think about starting a business in that realm. Focus on a niche and become an expert in your field.
