The Power of a Sale

In this uncertain economy, a good sale may be just what your business needs to increase profits. Having a sale will attract more customers and make you a viable option for those potential customers that may be on a tight budget.

Tips for Making a Sale Productive:

Promote: Never assume that people will just find your sale. Send out fliers, postcards and use word of mouth. If the Internet is used in your business, take advantage of social networking, viral marketing, email campaigns, advertising, etc. The point is tell the world you are having a sale!

Make it a Good One: If you are going to take the time to promote and have a sale. Make it worth your time and your potential customers. Go all out. Buy one get one free. Half off. Freebies with purchase. Free stuff attracts everyone! LOL! Make it big.

Be Creative: A good theme for your sale can work wonders. Use events going on around you to help you. Some examples are; Tax Cut sales, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter sales. You can also have holiday and anniversary sales. Think about your product and how you can use life and events to work with your sales.

Know your Customers: In order to have a productive sale, you need to know your customers. What do they like? What do they need? If you have a mailing list, ask them for feedback. Find out what your customers want in a sale!

Time: The sale cannot go on forever. So, make sure your potential customers know that this is a “limited time” event and they should jump on it while they can!

A good sale can be just what your business needs to get back into the game. Be creative, set yourself apart and cater to your customers. If you do, I am certain you should have success!

What Most Online Marketers Forget

It seems like almost every online marketer is completely focused on search engine rankings, distributing articles and working their rear ends off for traffic. One thing they forget about is what so many traditional brick-and-mortar businesses already know and practice because it’s very effective.

You can buy all the ads you want for your business and you can experience some great results, but if you’d like some more almost no-cost promotion that helps you build word-of-mouth and great reputation for your online business…you really should be developing your own publicity campaign through press releases.

When a media outlet talks about you, portrays you as an expert or mentions your business…that is more priceless than any advertising. It’s like an actual endorsement of you and your business. Who wouldn’t want that?

Well, it’s easier to do than you might think.

You may already know that Alice Seba has a complete system that shows you exactly how to write and distribute a press release to get noticed by the media….potentially saving your hundreds or thousands of dollars in advertising costs.

She has just added a new and unique piece of software called Press Release Profits Builder. It allows you to choose from HTML or plain text formatted releases and takes you step-by-step through the whole press release writing process. When you’re done, the software will produce a perfectly formatted release for you.

Here’s a note from Alice about the software:

“Now…let me be clear. This isn’t some magical software that allows you to click your mouse a few times and your release will be ready. Anybody who tries to sell you something like that is doing you an injustice. If you want the media’s attention, you’ve got to be unique and have something they want to share with their readers and viewers. This software helps you put together a release designed to get noticed.”

How to Conduct Target Market Research

Every business should be doing it, but unfortunately they either aren’t doing it at all or aren’t doing it effectively.  What am I talking about?  Market research, that’s what.  Without conducting detailed research about your target market, your business won’t reach it’s potential and will more than likely meet it’s demise.

In order to tell you HOW to conduct market research you must know what it is.  In a nutshell, market research is research that you do in order to determine what it is that makes your customers buy.  Here is a list of things that you can do to conduct market research that will tell you what you what your customers want and need so that you can make more sales and grow your business.

First, find the question or questions you want answers to.  Be as specific as possible so that you have the answers you need.  Going too broad may not really get to the answers you are really in search of.  For instance, if you are thinking of adding a product to your line, is it something your target market is in need or want of?  What would they most likely spend on a product or service such as the one you are asking about?

Take the questions and get your answers by doing the following:

  • Conduct a survey of current and potential customers.
  • Visit online forums and groups that include members of your market.  Remember to build relationships in these groups. Don’t just go to the forums and post your survey or question.
  • Interview other business owners in your market.
  • Monitor business trends in your market by reading and watching various media outlets.
  • Research your competition by being a customer and/or inquiring about their products or services.
  • Mail or telephone interviews.
  • For those with online businesses, set up a test page revolving around the product or service you are thinking of offering.  Give plenty of time to test the page and the traffic and activity of the visitors.

These are only a few of the ways you can conduct research for your target market.  The key isn’t what research you do, it’s the fact that you are doing something to learn more about the habits of that market.  By taking the time to find out more about the people you are targeting, you’ll come to realize that knowing those in your market is one of the best things you can do for you business.

Starting Your Own Home Business

By: Terri Seymour

OK, so you have researched the facts, weighed the pros and cons and have finally decided that a home business is right for you. But now you need to figure out what type of business you want and how to proceed with marketing this business.

There are many types of home businesses but not all of them are right for all people. You need to ask yourself these questions: Do I want to start my own business from scratch? Do I just want to join an MLM and sell for someone else? Do I want to sell physical products or digital products? Do I want to do all the work online or offline too? Do I want help with my business or do I want to go solo? Do I just want to become an affiliate and sell other people’s online products?

MLM/Direct Sales – The company you sell for is in control of how you run your business. You are paid a commission for sales and usually have to recruit a downline.

Distributorship –
You are in control of your own business. You keep all profits and do not need to recruit a downline.

Digital Products -
Selling digital products such as ebooks is done online and there is no need for an inventory, shipping or worrying about damaged goods.

Affiliate Programs -
many people make a good online income just by selling other people’s products.

Service Provider -
This would include such things as virtual assistant, party planner, pet sitter, etc.

These types of businesses can be combined to form one very successful business. Such as applying for a distributorship and then also offering ebooks on your online store site.

Once you have chosen your business and gotten all your permits, tax numbers, etc, you will need to start marketing your new business. There are countless ways to do this online and offline.

Offline Marketing

Offline marketing would include: business cards, flyers, attending your community events and networking, attending expos, craft fairs, trade shows, postcards, phone calls, newsletter advertising, door hangers, radio, fundraisers, school functions, catalog distribution, mailing lists, home parties, car magnets, brochures, seminars, yellow pages and more. Use your creativity to come up with your own unique marketing ideas.

Online Marketing

Marketing strategies online include: link exchanges, search engines, autoresponders, online auctions, email press release, online chats/seminars, ebooks, blogging, tutorials, ad swapping, ezine publishing, article marketing and much more!

To market your home business takes a lot of work, consistency, time and commitment. Handing out a couple business cards and throwing up a website will not suffice. Work as many as these marketing ideas as you can. Find out which ones really work for you and then expand on them. Then try more!

I want to make sure you understand that you cannot treat your business as a hobby. If you want a successful business with a full time income, you have to work your business full time. If you find one of these programs that claim you can make thousands a week for 5 minutes of work, (that actually work) please let me know. In the meantime, start using some of these ideas and get your business name out there!

Are you Ready for a Vacation?

By: Kara Kelso & Anita DeFrank

While this may seem like the perfect title for an ad, this is really an important business topic! There’s much to do before going on vacation, and your business needs to be ready.

We all need a break sometimes. Running a home business is hard work, no doubt about that. If you are planning your family vacation, don’t forget to make sure your business and customers are taken care of while you are gone!

- Notify friends and communities
Be sure to let all your groups and communities know you will be gone for a set amount of time. Email your closest associates to let them know when you are leaving and when you will be back. You never know if someone will be looking for you, so you’ll want to have a few that can say “she’ll be back on this date”. If you help moderate any message boards, communities etc, make sure you let the board owner know you will be gone.

- Put groups on “No Mail”
Make sure all your groups are set to no mail or daily digest, so you aren’t overwhelmed when you return.

- Notify team members
Be absolutely sure you let your team members know you’ll be gone until a certain date. Give them back up emails and phone numbers to call in case they need immediate help. You may consider asking your upline or a trustworthy (knowledgeable and active) downline member to help with some basic questions for you.

- Notify customers
If you have a personal website, edit your home page to mention you are on vacation. You can still take orders while you are gone, but if you ship them out yourself, make sure they know the order won’t be filled until you return.

- Have back ups

If there is someone who can take over some of your duties while you are gone, contact them before you leave. Make sure they have access to certain email addresses and websites.

- Do NOT put your email on auto reply!
Many do this and it’s not a bad idea, although it’s extremely annoying for those who already know or don’t care. Auto replies go to everyone who sends you an email, including newsletter owners, groups, etc. You could be doing more harm than good with auto replies!

These are some of the basics of taking care of business while you are on vacation. The most important thing to remember is not to worry – remember, you are on vacation to RELAX!

Have fun!

Working From Home – 6 Mistakes to Avoid

By: Sachin Asher

Are you thinking of working from home?

Home based work has its own set of challenges. Here is a list of mistakes that you should avoid.

1. Lack of Initial Planning

A home based venture can be started any time and in any manner that you want. There are no plans to be approved and no blueprint to be prepared. However the lack of proper planning can be disastrous. Plan thoroughly before you initiate anything. Think of all the raw materials and resources that will be required. Make sure you have proper understanding of the nature of your work and its challenges. Ascertain that you have some extra funds to meet unseen expenses.

2. Indiscipline
When you are working from home, there is no one to keep an eye on your work. A temptation to do something other than work always exists. This can be a cause of distraction. A lot of discipline will be required to keep your focus on work.

3. Procrastination
In the absence of a boss and with no deadlines to meet, you will keep procrastinating. A good strategy would be to set time targets. Time management skills are a common factor to successes of most people. Make a time table and stick to it.

4. Boredom
When you don’t like a thing, you aren’t going to do it for long. Select a line of work that you enjoy. Working from home usually means long hours of solitude. There is a strong possibility that you will quit out of boredom if you don’t choose an area of work that you enjoy. Taking little breaks from your work can also do wonders to your mood.

5. Stopping the Learning Process
Working from home means no one to interact with, no one to compete with and no one to exchange ideas with. This may lead to a stagnation of your knowledge base. To avoid this, interact frequently with the people in your field. Keep abreast with the latest developments concerning your field and read more than just the local newspaper. Internet is a great source of information – use it to your advantage.

6. Compromising the Quality

Home based works means there are no benchmarks with which you can compare your work. A strict watch on work quality is needed. You should always be looking for ways to improve the quality of your work.

Most of the people, who are working from home, may be making these mistakes; but making mistakes is not a sin – it’s a sin when you refuse to correct them. Start correcting them today.

Are you Chasing your Visitors Away?

By: Terri Seymour

To keep your visitors coming back, the main goals of your website are for visitor participation and benefits. Provide an interesting, beneficial and useful website and they will come back!

If your site is annoying you can be sure they will find another site to visit, never to come back to yours.

Here are some ways you can be sure to annoy your visitors:

(they might not annoy all, but probably the majority)

Frames - Chopping up a site with frames is a great way to get your visitors frustrated. These frames are very obtrusive and make navigation and reading your site much harder. They are also disliked by the search engine spiders.

Overbearing Graphics - Not only are these blinking and flashing graphics distracting and unnecessary, they can also cause your site to download very slowly. Most people do not have the time to sit and wait for an extremely slow site, and will leave before even knowing what your site has to offer.

No Contact Information – I cannot stress enough how important it is to have your email address and other contact info on every page. This will add credibility to your site and always give your visitors a reason to be assured that you can be reached when needed.

Hard To Navigate -You want your visitors to be able to get around your site without trouble. Have your links all together in a place that is easily seen. Have them in the same place on every page.

Inconsistent Page Design – I have been on some sites where after clicking on a link, I didn’t even know if I was at the same site. The page was totally different and did not have any of the same information or links as the previous page.  After trying to find what I was looking for and not finding it, I left. Please keep your site design uniform and consistent. This will make it much easier on your visitors.

Spelling and Grammar – Always proofread your web pages. Designing and building a professional website is a waste of time if it reads like a five year old wrote it. With spell checker, grammar checker, dictionaries, etc. there is no excuse for poorly written web pages!

Too Many Banners – If you want banners on your site, set up a banner exchange page for this purpose only. Do not have your homepage or other pages so loaded with banners that there isn’t room for anything else.

Hard To Read Text -
Do not use fancy text or pale text on a pale background. The easiest to read is a dark text on a light background. Also, if you use a textured or print background, be sure that it is not hard on the eyes.  One site I visited had a weave look background that made the text so hard to read, after a few minutes of looking around I had to leave because I was getting a headache. If you think it is easy to see get a few  more opinions just to be sure!

Music - Music used to be very common on the web. Practically every site you went to had music. More and more people started realizing that this was a major distraction and annoyance to a lot of people. If you really want music, have a choice for your visitors. Let them decide if they want the music.

Lack of Content – You’ve got to have content. People visit a website to see what the site has that will benefit them. Useful, helpful, practical content can’t be beat! This would include resources, freebies, tips, ideas, information, interaction, contests, etc.

One thing you can do is visit several sites that pertain to your business. Study these sites and write down what you find annoying. Write down any reasons you have for leaving the site. Take note of what you like about these sites. Incorporate all these findings into  creating a sharp, clean, useful website with nothing that will chase away your visitors!

How Google Detects Invalid Clicks – A Must Know for Every Adsense Publisher

By: Casey Yew

A lot of Google AdSense publishers are banned from the Google AdSense program for invalid clicks. Some of these Google AdSense publishers manage to get their AdSense account reinstated. However, majority of them failed to do so. As a result, they are banned from the Google AdSense program.

Google does not reveal any specific details about invalid clicks in order to protect their proprietary clicks fraud detection technology. Hence, you would not know who is generating these clicks on your site or where these clicks come from.

If you are not getting any details of the invalid clicks from the termination letter, it may be a good idea to learn how Google defines these clicks and ways to detect them.

Google defines invalid clicks as:

• Manual clicks intended to increase publisher’s advertising
• Clicks by automated tools, robots, or other deceptive software.

So how does Google detect these clicks and how would they know which clicks are invalid?

Google AdSense team uses three powerful tools to detect invalid clicks:

Detection and Filtering Tool: Each click on an AdSense ad is monitored by Google system. Google will record the IP of each click, the time of the click, duplicate clicks and various click patterns. Google will use these factors and filter out potential invalid clicks.

Advanced Monitoring Tool: Google uses its proprietary software to monitor clicks fraud activity. They are constantly working to improve their technology.

The Google Team:
In addition, Google has a team that uses specialized tools and techniques to examine individual cases of clicks fraud. When Google system detects potentially invalid clicks, a member of this team will examines the affected account.

Despite the effort that Google put in to improve their clicks fraud detection technology, there are few innocent publishers whose AdSense account has been suspended or banned temporarily for different reasons. For example, a sudden spike in your AdSense earnings would probably raise the red flag in their system and cause your AdSense account to be suspended. If your AdSense account is suspended for invalid clicks which you did not commit, Google provides you a way to make your appeal:

www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/request.py?contact=invalid_clicks_appeal

A Piece of Advice

When you are making your appeal via email, you should stay calm and plan the right strategy. You should be patient when dealing with Google and most importantly you should be polite when communicating with them. You may take initiative to provide them with all the documents they need.

What's so scary about Business Planning?

By: Anne Maybus

“So you’re in business for yourself?  How did you start off?” “Well I had an idea and then I did a business plan to see how I could make it work.”

Oh-oh.  Just mention the words ‘Business Plan’ and watch the conversation fizzle out right in front of you.  You can hear the trample of feet dashing to the exits and smell the scent of fear in the air.

What is it that makes people glaze over or disappear when you mention those words? In particular, why does it make women flee?

Visited a Business Forum yet?

Have you ever visited some of the online business forums?  These forums are the place to hang out for people who are in business, or are looking for a start.   Take a look at the topics on the message board.   What is one of the quietest topics?  Yep, business planning.   Yet if an aspect of business planning is listed under a different heading, for example ‘marketing plans’ it can be rushed with responses.  Is marketing so much more glamorous than Business Planning?   Why the fear?  These are the very people who need or have a business plan.  This should be an active topic.

What is the purpose of a Business Plan?

A business plan will help you to decide if the business is viable before you even start.  It could save you thousands of dollars by thinking it through before you rush in.  How much money do you have to set up your home based business?  If you’re like many of us the answer is little or none, so why waste the little you do have on a business venture doomed to fail?  A plan will also paint a picture of where you are heading and why.  Simple.

The statistics.

Business Victoria shows that 95.7 percent of Victorian businesses are small businesses (96.4 percent throughout Australia) and that at June 2001, an estimated 181,800 (65.2 percent) of all Victorian small businesses operated from or at home.  We know too, that home based businesses make up over two-thirds of the total small business picture in Australia.

That’s a lot of businesses plugging away to make an income.

Figures from the mid 1990’s show that 6.1% of businesses ceased operating in Australia for reasons other than a change of ownership. 6% isn’t very high, but 23,200 businesses sounds a lot more, doesn’t it?  Remember too, that these figures are 10 years old and we’ve had phenomenal growth in the area of small and HBB since then.  Scary thought, isn’t it?

Many HBB’s probably never even make it to the statistics as they are so small and invisible. So if they fail, who will notice?  Did they have a business plan?

Image problems.

If a business plan is so worthwhile then why do so many people shy away from it?

Business Plans have an image problem.  They’ve been associated with big business and high finance for so long they deserve to have their own little collar and tie.  Doing a business plan involves financial projections, cash flow, and all those hard to work out figures doesn’t it?

Short answer?  No, they don’t always have to involve the numbers.

If you need a start up loan, a grant, or an investor, then yes, you’ll need to do the numbers.  After all, who’s going to give you money when you can’t tell them how much you will need?  Find yourself a good accountant to help you with the financial side of the plan because that’s what they are good at.

If you’re really serious about building a business then it makes sense to do some numbers anyway.  It would be nice to know if you’re going to make a profit, wouldn’t it? Keep it simple.  If you know you have a profit of $5 per item and you need to make $100 per week, then you know you need to sell 20 items every week.  Can you do that?  If the answer is ‘no’ then you’d better look for something else to do.

The Living business plan.

I divide business plans into two distinct categories.  There is the Traditional business plan which is so loved by banks, and then there is the Living business plan.

The Traditional business plan is the one you keep in your filing cabinet after your merchant facilities or start-up loan have been granted.  The Living plan is the kind of plan you can use on a daily or weekly basis to keep you on track.  It should set out your ultimate target, list the goals you will need to achieve along the way, and some strategies you need to have in place to meet your goals.  It doesn’t have to be set in concrete; neither does it wear a collar and tie!  It doesn’t have to be typed or printed.  It just has to mean something to you.

My favorite Living business plan is a collage of images all representing things the owner is striving to achieve both personally and professionally.  It has a series of images beneath it depicting the steps along the way.

How inspiring is that?

My own plan is in the shape of a step ladder with my Ultimate Business Heaven at the highest point.  On each rung I have listed the things I will have managed to do by then.  That gives me a map to my goals and also allows me to see when I have reached each rung.   When I have another of my ‘you-beaut’ ideas the plan will help me to see if the idea will take me up or down the ladder.  I am very attached to my great ideas, but why waste my energy on them if they won’t get me where I want to go?

Your choice.

Business plans are a necessity; there’s no question about that.  The only decision you have to make is why you want the plan.  If you need to show it to someone else, then go the whole way with a traditional plan.  If it’s for yourself, then do what really means something to you.

Just because it’s in pictures doesn’t mean it isn’t a business plan.

So what’s scary about that?

Now let me talk to you about statistics………….zzzzzz

How to Start up a Small Business

By: David Gass

Starting up a small business is always exciting. It is also full of challenges. It is easy to go wrong if everything isn’t planned properly. Not setting it up correctly can create legal problems. Here are some tips to help start a small business so the new business is viable, well managed, and successful.

Business ideas
It is always a good idea to start with a list of things to do with a business. Start with hobbies or interests and add work experience to come up with possible business ideas. Once the correct idea is found analyze its feasibility as a means of making money. To do this, construct a business feasibility study.

Business Planning
Business Planning helps to detail all aspects of the business. From identifying the suppliers to determining product costs, from sales-pricing to establishing customer and competitor profiles, from defining marketing strategies to planning taxes, the feasibility study explains whether the business will be viable or not.

It also helps figure out how to finance the business. This may be with savings, loans, or through credit card financing. Whatever the decision, don’t forget to develop a business plan, especially if there is a need for borrowing money through a loan or credit. A business plan not only helps get financing, but it also keeps the entrepreneur focused on the new business. It helps define business activities, organizational goals and how to achieve them. It details the business environment of the industry and, most importantly, contains the financial information bankers look for.

At this stage, think about the legal structure of the company. Shall it be a sole proprietorship, a partnership or a corporation? Check some of the websites that provide assistance to help determine, which form is more tax-efficient and suitable.

Legal Set-up
Find out what permits and licenses are needed to operate the business. Do remember to double check whether anything is missed. Some states require special licenses to sell services or a particular type of product.

Operational Set-up
With most of the underlying business formalities completed, get the marketing material ready for the big day of the business launch. The company needs business cards, letterheads, advertising brochures, a press kit with press releases, and a corporate dossier.

Open a bank account. Set up accounting systems. Get a business address to operate from. Arrange for the rental lease, and purchase office equipment and supplies. It would be a good idea, at this stage, to consider getting insurance for the business assets. Some insurance requirements, like employee compensation for example, are mandatory in most states, but others like fire, theft, or liability are advisable, though not absolutely necessary.

Additional Help
Many sites offer small businesses the software they need to begin. This software supplies all the needed forms and documents. It also gives detailed descriptions of the laws one must follow in setting up a new small business.
