Overcoming Writers Block

Writer’s block is the patron demon of the blank page. You may think you know EXACTLY what you’re going to write, but as soon as that evil white screen appears before you, your mind suddenly goes completely blank. I’m not talking about Zen meditation stare-at-the-wall-until-enlightenment-hits kind of blank.

I’m talking about sweat trickling down the back of your neck, anguish and panic and suffering kind of blank. The tighter the deadline, the worse the anguish of writer’s block gets.

Having said that, let me say it again. “The tighter the deadline, the worse the anguish of writer’s block gets.” Now, can you figure out what might possibly be causing this horrible plunge into speechlessness?

The answer is obvious: FEAR! You are terrified of that blank page. You are terrified you have absolutely nothing of value to say. You are afraid of the fear of writer’s block itself!

It doesn’t necessarily matter if you’ve done a decade of research and all you have to do is string sentences you can repeat in your sleep together into coherent paragraphs. Writer’s block can strike anyone at any time. Based in fear, it raises our doubts about our own self-worth, but it’s sneaky. It’s writer’s block, after all, so it doesn’t just come and let you know that. No, it makes you feel like an idiot who just had your frontal lobes removed through your sinuses. If you dared to put forth words into the greater world, they would surely come out as gibberish!

Let’s try and be rational with this irrational demon. Let’s make a list of what might possibly be beneath this terrible and terrifying condition.

1. Perfectionism. You must absolutely produce a masterpiece of literature straight off in the first draft. Otherwise, you qualify as a complete failure.

2. Editing instead of composing. There’s your monkey-mind sitting on your shoulder, yelling as soon as you type “I was born?,” no, not that, that’s wrong! That’s stupid! Correct?

3. Self-consciousness. How can you think, let alone write, when all you can manage to do is pry the fingers of writer’s block away from your throat enough so you can gasp in a few shallow breaths? You’re not focusing on what you’re trying to write, your focusing on those gnarly fingers around your windpipe.

4. Can’t get started. It’s always the first sentence that’s the hardest. As writers, we all know how EXTREMELY important the first sentence is. It must be brilliant! It must be unique! It must hook your reader’s from the start! There’s no way we can get into writing the piece until we get past this impossible first sentence.

5. Shattered concentration. You’re cat is sick. You suspect your mate is cheating on you. Your electricity might be turned off any second. You have a crush on the local UPS deliveryman. You have a dinner party planned for your in-laws. You . . . Need I say more. How can you possibly concentrate with all this mental clutter?

6. Procrastination. It’s your favorite hobby. It’s your soul mate. It’s the reason you’ve knitted 60 argyle sweaters or made 300 bookcases in your garage workshop. It’s the reason you never run out of Brie.

How to Overcome Writer’s Block

Okay, I can hear that herd of you running away from this article as fast as you can. Absurd! you huff. Never in a million years, you fume. Writer’s block is absolutely, undeniably, scientifically proven to be impossible to overcome.

Oh, just get over it! Well, I guess it’s not that easy. So try to sit down for just a few minutes and listen. All you have to do is listen. You don’t have to actually write a single word.

Ah, there you all are again. I am beginning to make you out now that the cloud of dust is settling.

I am here to tell you that WRITER’S BLOCK CAN BE OVERCOME.

Please, remain seated.

There are ways to trick this nasty demon. Pick one, pick several, and give them a try. Soon, before you even have a chance for your heartbeat to accelerate, guess what? You’re writing.

Here are some tried and true methods of overcoming writer’s block:

1. Be prepared. The only thing to fear is fear itself. (I know, that’s a cliché, but as soon as you start writing, feel free to improve on it.) If you spend some time mulling over your project before you actually sit down to write, you may be able to circumvent the worst of the crippling panic.

2. Forget perfectionism. No one ever writes a masterpiece in the first draft. Don’t put any expectations on your writing at all! In fact, tell yourself you’re going to write absolute garbage, and then give yourself permission to happily stink up your writing room.

3. Compose instead of editing. Never, never write your first draft with your monkey-mind sitting on your shoulder, making snide editorial comments. Composing is a magical process. It surpasses the conscious mind by galaxies. It’s even incomprehensible to the conscious, editorial, monkey-mind. So prepare an ambush. Sit down at your computer or your desk. Take a deep breath and blow out all your thoughts. Let your finger hover over your keyboard or pick up your pen. And then pull a fake: appear to be about to begin to write, but instead, using your thumb and index finger of your dominant hand, flick that little annoying ugly monkey back into the barrel of laughs it came from. Then jump in. quickly! Write, scribble, scream, howl, let everything loose, as long as you do it with a pen, or your computer keyboard.

4. Forget the first sentence. You can sweat over that all-important one liner when you’ve finished your piece. Skip it! Go for the middle or even the end. Start wherever you can. Chances are, when you read it over, the first line will be blinking its little neon lights right at you from the depths of your composition.

5. Concentration. This is a hard one. Life throws us so many curve balls. How about thinking about your writing time as a little vacation from all those annoying worries. Banish them! Create a space, perhaps even a physical one, where nothing exists except the single present moment. If one of those irritating worries gets by you, stomp on it like you would an ugly bug!

6. Stop procrastinating. Write an outline. Keep your research notes within sight. Use someone else’s writing to get going. Babble coherently on paper or on the computer if you have to.

Just do it! (I know, I stole that line from somewhere). Tack up anything that could possibly help you to get going: notes, outlines, pictures of your grandmother. Put the cookie you will be allowed to eat when you finish your first draft within sight. But, out of reach. Then pick up the same type of writing that you need to write, and read it. Then read it again. Soon, trust me, the fear will slowly fade away. As soon as it does, grab your keyboard, and get writing!

Is Writing an Article Hard?

Writing and submitting articles is an effective marketing strategy to deliver targeted visitors, increase your rankings and boost sales. However, it is easy to equate article writing with tasks such as writing high school or university essays. The memories of the pain involved in this form of writing can take time to fade away. The good news is that after learning a few simple steps, writing your own articles is not as hard as it appears.

One of the biggest hurdles most new writers face is finding ideas to write about. The easiest way to begin is to write about things you are interested in and preferably passionate about. You already have knowledge in these areas which can be shared with others. It is easy to under-estimate your own abilities in areas you are experienced in. Talented people are often surprised by the level of questions novices ask. It is important to remember that there is no such thing as a stupid question only stupid answers.

Once you have decided on a general area, a good way to narrow the topic down is to focus on the problems that people have. Typically, people read articles because they want to be entertained or they want information. Writing entertaining articles is a particular and more difficult skill. However, writing informative articles can be as simple as sharing tips that you have learned. A guiding principle is to expect the readers to be looking for what is in it for me.

You may already know the common problems that people have in the particular field, but if not, a good source of information is to look at related online forums and note the most common questions asked. If you do not have all the answers a small bit of research can assist. Often the answers are readily available with a Google search which the readers could do themselves. However, you are adding value and convenience by providing a range of answers in a single document.

Most people do not like to read large documents from the Web, so unlike long essays, articles tend to be around 400 words long. If you break the article into an introduction, a small number of sub-headings and a conclusion you may only have to write about 50 words in each section. The sub-headings may be for authoring purposes only, but if they are relevant they can be left in the final article.

The first draft should be for your eyes only. Do not try to produce a final copy as you write. It tends to be much quicker to get your thoughts down and come back to edit later. The final step in the writing process is to proofread your article making sure that the writing flows and would be interesting to the reader. Ask yourself, does the article provide information the potential reader is looking for? It can also be helpful to have someone else proofread the article. This is also the time to remove spelling and grammatical errors.

If you still have problems writing you may want to do a search for article writing software. There are many packages around which can make the process easier. Similarly, there are numerous e-books available on the topic and many of them are available for free.

Once you have written your article you may want to add it to your own website as an item that search engines love, a piece of original content. If you add an About the Author section with a link to your website, you can also submit it to article directories. As other websites publish your article you receive another thing that search engines look for, one way back links. Article submission can be a tedious process, but software and websites that can submit to multiple directories in one go exist to make the job much easier.

After writing your first few articles you will find it is not as daunting as it first appears. You never know, you may even want to offer your services as a freelance writer on the Internet as a way to make some extra income.

How Google Detects Invalid Clicks – A Must Know for Every Adsense Publisher

A lot of Google AdSense publishers are banned from the Google AdSense program for invalid clicks. Some of these Google AdSense publishers manage to get their AdSense account reinstated. However, majority of them failed to do so. As a result, they are banned from the Google AdSense program.

Google does not reveal any specific details about invalid clicks in order to protect their proprietary clicks fraud detection technology. Hence, you would not know who is generating these clicks on your site or where these clicks come from.

If you are not getting any details of the invalid clicks from the termination letter, it may be a good idea to learn how Google defines these clicks and ways to detect them.

Google defines invalid clicks as:

• Manual clicks intended to increase publisher’s advertising

Google AdSense team uses three powerful tools to detect invalid clicks:

Detection and Filtering Tool: Each click on an AdSense ad is monitored by Google system. Google will record the IP of each click, the time of the click, duplicate clicks and various click patterns. Google will use these factors and filter out potential invalid clicks.

Advanced Monitoring Tool: Google uses its proprietary software to monitor clicks fraud activity. They are constantly working to improve their technology.

The Google Team:
In addition, Google has a team that uses specialized tools and techniques to examine individual cases of clicks fraud. When Google system detects potentially invalid clicks, a member of this team will examines the affected account.

Despite the effort that Google put in to improve their clicks fraud detection technology, there are few innocent publishers whose AdSense account has been suspended or banned temporarily for different reasons. For example, a sudden spike in your AdSense earnings would probably raise the red flag in their system and cause your AdSense account to be suspended. Good Sense Google Adsense

I have enjoyed a steady increase in my Google Adsense payout during the past year. Let me share with you what I have learned.

Before beginning, I should mention that for Google Adsense Ads, text is BEST! Images can be distracting in a negative way to your visitors. Now, let’s begin…

PLACEMENT: The best clicks for me have always been from the top letter board. I highly recommend placing letter board Google ads at the top of every page of your site. Or at the very least a 468×60 banner. I have also found that my bottom letter board does well. This too should be placed on every page.

Another good spot is within the text of your content. It should flow with the text. The ads should not stand out.

APPEARANCE: It is crucial that your Google ads BLEND in with your site. The ad should have the same background color that your site does, including the borders. There should be no lines. It should look like you typed the text in. Finally, you should set the text color to be the same as your content text.

Remember, for optimum performance, Google ads should always blend and never stand out.

CHANNELS: These are an invaluable feature of the Google Adsense program. They really help you pin point what works best with your site. What works for me may not for you. You may find that a sidebar banner receives more clicks.

I suggest that you experiment with the channels and try out different placements and sizes. Give each of them a couple weeks. Keep a log and compare. Then you will know what your visitors tend to click on and can optimize.

This is something that you will want to do periodically to ensure continued success.

In closing, the best advice I can give you is to take the time to really see what works best and where for your site. And, even different pages within your site. If you take the time, you too will begin seeing a steady increase in your Google checks.

Is Building a Home Business a Sprint or Marathon?

Recently on a weekly training call with one of my mentors, he brought up a great question. He asked, “Is building a successful home business a sprint or marathon“?  Everyone stopped and you could hear our wheels turning. Then he said, “A sprint is over very quickly but a marathon takes more planning and happens over a longer period of time”.

The Sprint…..

You find the “perfect” home business. You sign up and someone yells, “GO”! You blast out of the starting gates.

After taking a look at your new web site. You send an email to everyone you know telling them about your new home business, including how easy it is going to be for you to make money and you also tell them everything about your products and how great they are.

You join the message forums/boards and the other web sites that your sponsor tells you to join. You listen to the company training calls. You do some advertising. You are happy when you see that a few people have visited your site and a couple have even ordered something. You say ok now I can relax since my business is off and going. Then the traffic stops and so do your sales. What happened????

The Marathon…..

You find the a home business that interests you. You send an email or call the person that is offering the opportunity. You ask questions to make sure that this new partnership is going to be the right fit and also to make sure that they are as interested in your success as you are. You sign up and someone yells, “GO”. You look over your new web site making sure you understand the companies policies and procedures.

You sit down and right out what it is that you are going to accomplish with your new home business. What are your goals? How much $$$$ do you want to make? How much time will you devote to your business each week?  What daily actions will you take to reach your goals? You share this information with your sponsor so that the two of you can work on this together.

You send out an email to family and friends letting them know about the Grand Opening of your new home business and you provide themwith your web site address, that is all the information you give them. (You are not trying to sale them anything right now.)

You join the message boards/forums and other web sites that your sponsor suggests you join. You make sure you are on all the company training calls. You do some advertising. You continue to talk to others and research what are the best ways to drive traffic to your web site and how to get people interested in your opportunity.

You also work on self improvement by listening to tapes and reading books. You are very excited when your see the traffic that has been to your web site and you have several sales.

You continue to do the things you have been doing and also continue to research new ways of growing your business. You start teaching your new team to do the samethings you have been doing and your share the new things you learn with them.

Every day you see your business growing…..

So I ask you, based on the information above what is the best way to build a successful home business?
