By: Mitchell Hampson

Before you can decide if you need more traffic on your site you first need to know what it is. Traffic refers to the number of hits that you are getting on your site. If you are getting lots of hits then you are getting lots of traffic but the thing to remember is that you can never have too much. Even if you are getting a good amount of visitors your numbers could still be better.

There is only one way to make money online and that is to generate traffic. If you are not getting the visitors you can’t be making the money. It is that simple. So how can you generate traffic to your site? All you need to do is learn a little about pay-per-click (PPC) as well as search engine optimization (SEO).

There are a few different methods of SEO that you can use in your business. The first is the most simple and that is to start writing relevant content. The use of keywords is one of the most powerful ways that you can drive traffic to your website. The smart webmasters have articles written for their site that have these certain keywords in them. The search engines like Google and Yahoo and Alta Vista pick up on these keywords and then show your pages in the results shown to people looking for info online. It is a simple concept that you can use to generate millions of hits instantly.

If you are looking to generate FREE traffic online then all you have to do is start exchanging links with other people or get your links posted on other sites. You can use forums, message boards, blogs or any other sites online. Try getting in touch with people who run sites with similar interests to yours. See if they would be willing to post your link on their resource or links page, you can even offer to post their link on yours in return. This is a massively powerful way to generate FREE traffic and boost your rankings in the search engines and thereby boost the traffic you are seeing each day.

Then there is pay-per-click. This is the perfect solution for those in e-commerce. When you are thinking about going the pay-per-click you should check out the options at Google Adwords and Yahoo Overture as these are the most widely used pay-per-click options. These two are the best because they work with all of the search engines not just one or two. This means that you have your ads getting out there to the most people all over the world. It is vital that you do a little math before you get into pay-per-click. You need to know how much you can afford to pay per click, the goal is to still be making a profit!

There are many different search engine optimization techniques out there for you to choose from and each one has its own set of pros and cons. It is up to you to do your homework and learn which solution is right for your business. The Internet offers a vast selection of opportunities that anyone can make use of so get out there and start generating more traffic today!

Increasing Link Popularity

Search engines are the gateway to the Internet; they are the first tool that potential customers use to find the products and services they need. This is why link popularity is so imperative. If the customers do not find your website, you have no possibilities of making any sales.

You’re probably wondering what the blazes is popular about a link! Well, in a word – plenty! Link popularity refers to
the ranking assigned to your website by the search engines, and it determines the ranking your page gets when keywords are entered into a search engine. So, you’re probably wondering, how do I make my link popular?

Search engines are discretionary, giving status and ranking to sites that have links to their pages from related, quality sites. It’s a simple formula, but a very important one. Google created the system, and now virtually all the most popular search engines employ it to rank your web pages in their indexes.

The more commonly used your keyword is, the harder it will be to achieve link popularity, but without achieving this
step, it is almost certain your site will never rank highly on any search engine. But don’t be discouraged; there are tried and true ways of achieving link popularity using the most competitive keywords.

There are a few things you should be aware of. The first is that just linking up with a large number of other websites will not achieve link popularity. In fact, it may have quite the opposite effect. This is particularly true when pertaining to websites that are nothing more than “link farms” – pages containing line after line of indiscriminate links. Search engines may aggressively discriminate against your website if you are associated with a link farm, so steer clear of them!

The next thing to bear in mind is the quality of the site you are linking to. Never link to a page you have reservations about your visitors seeing. The last thing you want your website to appear as is indiscriminate and cheap. Linking to sites of poor quality will only lessen your link popularity, if not completely destroy it.

So let’s get to what you need to do to achieve supreme link popularity and improve your rankings to stellar status on all the popular search engines.

The first step, and the fastest way to get your foot in the door, is to get a listing in a popular directory, such as Open Directory Project and Yahoo. If your site is business-related, you will want to be listed on Yahoo, and despite the fact that it will cost you around $300 a year, it will be money well spent. If your site is non-commercial, the listing will be free, but it will take time and follow-up to actually get it listed. Open Directory is gives you a free listing whether you are business-related or non-commercial, but be prepared to make a lot of follow-up inquiries before you see your site
listed.

You are aiming to get listed in the highest level of appropriate category, and this just takes some common sense. For example, if your company ships Alpaca wool from an Alpaca farm located in the middle of Nowhere, Tiny State, do NOT submit your listing to “Retailers from Nowhere, Tiny State.” BIG MISTAKE! All you have to do is look a little deeper – and submit your listing to the “Fine Alpaca Wool” category. You will not only associate yourself with culture and quality, but you will be listed in a national category.

The next step after you have attained directory listings is to locate other quality sites that will increase your link popularity. Try to find sites that are in some way related to yours, so not only will your link popularity increase, but your customer base may also be expanded. You want to avoid your competitors and look for sites that are useful to your site’s visitors. Let’s look at the Alpaca Wool site example. Linking up to a site that sells knitting supplies would be helpful to your visitors, and the chances of the knitting supply site wanting to link up to your site are also greater. By linking to a related site that will be relevant to your website’s traffic, you are increasing both of your site’s business prospects – and both of your sites’ link popularity.

Not all sites want to link to other sites, so you will have to do some research when you are looking for possible linking partners. Google is an excellent starting place for your search. Make sure you enter keywords that you think quality customers will also enter to find your own site. Remember, your criteria are quality, highly ranked, non-competing websites that have a links or a resource page. Go to these sites and objectively assess them. Look at the quality of the product, the graphics, and the ease of use. Then check out the other sites they are linked to, and determine if your own site would fit in with the crowd.

When you decide you have found a good prospect, you must set out to woo them. The first thing to do is to add a link on your own links page to their site. This is an essential first step; it shows good faith, and ups your chances significantly of their reciprocity. After you have added their link, you must contact the webmaster of the site. Since this is almost always done by email, you want to make sure it is immediately clear that your message is not junk mail. This requires that you tell them right off the bat that you have added a link to their page on your site. A hook like this almost always insures the reader will read on.

Next, be sure to be flattering and let them know how much you appreciate their website. Make sure you emphasize that you have actually visited their site, and that their site is not just a random pick. Give them the address of your links page, and ask them to check out the link for themselves. It’s a good idea to mention that they will not only benefit from the increased traffic your website will  direct their way, but you will also increase their link popularity. Briefly, explain why link popularity is so essential, but do this in a sentence or two so you don’t sound like a professor! Finally, tell them you would greatly appreciate if they would reciprocally add a link on their own links page to your website.

Go through this process with as many appropriate sites as you can find, bearing in mind the criteria of quality and non-competitiveness. After you have emailed all relevant sites, be sure to check these websites frequently to see if they have added a link to your page. Give it about a month, and if no link appears, try another charming email. Then give it another month, and if your site is still absent from their links page, it’s time to remove their link from your own links page. The only time you want to pursue a  ink further than this is if you believe a site is crucial to your link popularity and your business needs. Just remember to keep all your communications complimentary and cordial.

Then set up a schedule to check your ranking in search engines frequently to see if your link popularity has improved. This is not achievable in the blink of an eye. It will take some time and a good deal of work. There is no way around the labor-intensive quality of improving your link popularity, which is why search engines regard it with such importance.

By the way – make sure you have a beautiful, streamlined site or you will never persuade anyone to link up to you. Be prepared to keep plugging away at this process, as long as it takes, until you achieve link popularity stardom!

How to Select Keywords for SEO

By: Evelyn Lim

Selecting the correct keywords can make or break your website. Potential customers search the web for desired sites, and if your website doesn’t have the keywords they’re looking for, they’ll miss you.

Determining keywords is an art; it’s best to work backwards. What would a customer search for if they were looking for your site? You literally have to put yourself in the consumer’s place and let go of your preconceived notions about what you think your keywords are. You should remember when writing your site that you need to use words that are not only related to your content, but are popular search words as well. This is called keyword optimization, or choosing the most searched keywords related to your content.

Spend some time listing all of the words and phrases that are related to your website content. Get ideas from everyone you can think of and list them all. Visit competitors’ sites and see what meta tags they use. After this research, you are ready to develop your own keyword phrases.

There are several sites designed to assist you in keyword optimization. Here are a few of the free ones:-

The Overture Keyword Tool (www.inventory.overture.com) lists searches related to the keyword you provide. This took is great for expanding your list.

Wordtracker (www.wordtracker.com) helps identify keywords that will help your ranking on search engines. Wordtracker also gives you other keyword combinations that you may have overlooked.

The Keyword Tumbler (www.keywordtumbler.com) takes your existing keyword phrases and mixes it up to form new phrases and variations that you can include in your meta tags.

A great website is not so great if no one finds it. Remember to research your keywords carefully from the consumer’s viewpoint and then sit back and watch the traffic roll in!

Essential First Step For Internet Home Business Success

By: Sarah Smith

There are free software programs that anyone can access and use to find this information. Good Keywords is one such program. I would go so far as to say I wouldn’t even go any further with your Internet home business plans until you have explored the information waiting for you at Good Keywords.

Why am I so obsessed with this piece of free software? Firstly I have a passion for free effective Internet business tools. I believe that the average person on the street can succeed in creating a successful Internet home business if they become aware of the right way to go about it. This isn’t to say that there is only one right way. I’m just pointing out that if you have very limited financial resources it should not stop you succeeding in business on the Internet.

Good Keywords will instantly provide you with extremely important pieces of information. The first thing you need to consider when starting your new business is the product or service you will be promoting. You need to know that there is an actual market on the Internet for the product or service you have in mind. You may be in for a shock but you need to be fully aware of supply and demand before you go any further.

For this article I will use the example of home made soap.

You’ve been invloved with making your own soap for a while now. It started as a bit of an interest then it became your hobby. It’s lovely on the skin and made of all natural ingredients. It smells great. It looks great. You’ve been giving it to friends and family as birthday presents but you now have too much of it.You made a beautiful packaging for it. The local gift shop has agreed to sell your excess stock. You live in a small town and there aren’t that many tourists coming through a lot of the time. You sell a few bars to locals. Sales are steady but you’d really love to hit the big time. You decide to look at the Internet as a vehicle to sell your product.

You download your Good Keywords free software and type in the words home made soap. To your shock you find on Overture US only 199 people typed in these words.

You use this information to do a quick search in one of the popular search engines. You type in the search words home made soap and to your horror you find there are 20,600,00 websites that will be competing with you for the top places for these search words. How on earth is any one of those 199 people going to find you amongst all those sites?

Good Keywords will also give you a lot of related words that you can consider.

For example 5,609 people in the last month searched for natural soap. Your search engine search tells you there are 22,400,000 sites for this search term. Even so you already know that your chances of having someone find your site look a bit better if you choose the keywords natural soap instead of home made soap.

These are still massive numbers. You may even be starting to think the situation is hopeless. It may or may not be. You may be starting to think about selling other things to do with soap.

You type in soap making as your key word and you find 16,237 people searched for this last month. Your search engine check shows you there are 46,100,000 sites. These are still huge numbers but they appear on the surface to be getting better. At least the number of people searching for your keywords is improving.

You try the keyword soap making supply. This reveals to you that 3,518 people searched for this term. Your search engine results confirm a massive 11,700,000 sites are present.

You will need to use your imagination and continue your research at this stage.

Lets say you have decided on your 3 top keywords. You have decided to go with soap making, natural soap and soap making supplies. You have had a bit of a rethink about the kind of business you‘ll be and you’ve decided you will sell your own lovely soaps and be a supplier of things people will want to buy to make their own soap.

It really doesn’t matter what your product or service is you still need to be informed about basics of supply and demand. The selection of your keywords is a very important task. These words will form the basis of your future domain name and the name you choose for your website. Do not underestimate the importance of this first step.

This is only the beginning of your journey but at least you are starting your business on the right foot. Your eyes are open and you haven’t wasted any money. You are fully aware that the competition is huge. You are either going to give up at this point or get excited and take up the challenge of creating your very own successful Internet home business.

How Writing Articles Can Increase Your Business

By: Stephanie Davies

Well, for starters, you are reading this right? Many online business owners use article writing as a way to spread the word about their business and their website, and if you aren’t doing so, you are missing out on a lot of potential customers!

In this article, I will show you some very simple yet effective ways to write articles easily to increase traffic to your website.

The first thing you need to do in order to write an effective article is to write about what you know. If you don’t know about the internal combustion engine, you shouldn’t be writing articles about the internal combustion engine. Hopefully, you already know a lot about what you are selling, so that part should fall right into place.

For example, if you sell advertising, write articles about advertising: how to advertise effectively, ways to advertise, how not to advertise, how advertising can help you, and so on. You may also write article on other topics you have knowledge about that may not relate to your business. For instance, I have written a lot of articles about cats, housecleaning, and religion, yet these have nothing to do with my business. However, writing articles that are related in some way to your business will only help to attract visitors that are interested in what you sell.

Another thing to keep in mind is where your articles are being published. Are you submitting them to search engines? What about to article directories? Are you publishing them on your website or in newsletters? There are dozens of places you can place your article to get others to read it. Of course, the more places you submit your article, the more chances it will have of being read. Just be careful to make sure who your target audience is. You don’t want to submit your article to a gardening website if your article is about flying airplanes. Not only is the chance that your article will be declined larger than normal, but even if by chance it does get published, people at that site generally won’t care about the topic.

I highly recommend article-publishing services to submit your articles to article directories. The best I have found on the internet is Article Marketer, however there are alternative submission services as well. I also recommend submitting your articles by hand as well, as not all publishing services can cover all the article directories out there, not to mention you will be able to direct your article better as well. Another great place to get your articles seen is to swap or exchange articles with newsletter publishers. If you don’t have a newsletter for your business, you are missing out! (But that is a topic for a whole other article!) And finally, doing a simple Google search for “Submit Your Article” will net a huge amount of places for you to submit your articles.

When you actually go to write the article, here are a few simple tips to get your article noticed:

1. Grab the reader’s attention in the first paragraph. If your article reads like an instruction manual (unless of course, that is what it is), people will get bored quickly.

2. Have a sense of humor. If your article isn’t meant to be humorous, you can always make small quips, or include something offhand in your bio.

3. Speaking of which, always, always, ALWAYS make sure you have a clear, concise, and well-written bio at the bottom of your articles that simply tells a little about you and the URL of your website.

4. Proofread! When you are done writing your article, look it over and make sure it reads easily, fluidly, and contains no grammatical or spelling errors.

Absolutely anyone is capable of writing good articles that can bring in more traffic to their website. With the right knowledge, and the time and effort to do so, effective articles can benefit your business as well as the article directories and places you submit to. If you follow these simple strategies, you will see a marked improvement in your traffic stats.
