Wouldn’t it be nice to roll out of bed, slip on a robe and slippers and shuffle down the hall to your home office to work? Today over 137 million people world-wide do just that at least part time as more and more companies take advantage of the cost savings that telecommuting programs offer. One of the best places to find these companies is online, but you must beware. While more and more legitimate work-at-home jobs can be found online, so can scams.

Here’s what you need to know and do if you are looking for a real work-at-home job online.

1) Understand that you aren’t going to sign up to work at home. Telecommuting work is found in the same way that traditional work is found and usually involves an application or resume, and interview process.

2) You can’t pay to get hired. Any company that says you can work for it by sending some money is not offering a job. It’s okay to invest in a good work-at-home job database or hiring a professional resume writer, but you should never, ever, ever, pay to get hired. Let me add here that a legitimate company will never need to use your personal bank account to do business either. Never pay money nor use your bank in a work-at-home job.

3) Be open to many job types. Instead of thinking, “I want to sit home and type,” think about all the skills you have that can be used at home. Are you a good researcher? Do you have good phone skills? Are you highly organized? Are you creative? Can you write persuasively? Make a list of all your skills, experiences, talents and hobbies and search for jobs that need those attributes.

4) Learn to do a job that has a high demand for workers. There are certain job types that have many job openings right now such as copywriting, customer service, web and graphic design, medical transcription, writers, and more. If you can’t do any of these jobs, why not learn how? Most can be either self-taught or learned through an online or correspondence course.

5) Look for work where jobs are posted. Most people get in trouble because they look for the wrong types of jobs in the wrong places. Use job search sites not search engines to find work-at-home jobs. Visit reputable work-at-home websites (offer articles, tips and information beyond affiliate programs) to learn about working at home and also to get job leads.

6) Be professional. I can’t believe some of the email I receive from people who want to work at home who tell me they can type and yet their letters have typos and grammatical errors. Or they say they want to work at home, but provide no information on what they are qualified to do. You have one chance to convince a potential employer that you can do the job. The employer doesn’t care about your childcare hassles or illness. She only cares about finding the best person to do the job. All your interactions should focus on what you can do for the employer.

1. Lack of Initial Planning

A home based venture can be started any time and in any manner that you want. There are no plans to be approved and no blueprint to be prepared. However the lack of proper planning can be disastrous. Plan thoroughly before you initiate anything. Think of all the raw materials and resources that will be required. Make sure you have proper understanding of the nature of your work and its challenges. Ascertain that you have some extra funds to meet unseen expenses.

2. Indiscipline
When you are working from home, there is no one to keep an eye on your work. A temptation to do something other than work always exists. This can be a cause of distraction. A lot of discipline will be required to keep your focus on work.

3. Procrastination
In the absence of a boss and with no deadlines to meet, you will keep procrastinating. A good strategy would be to set time targets. Time management skills are a common factor to successes of most people. Make a time table and stick to it.

4. Boredom
When you don’t like a thing, you aren’t going to do it for long. Select a line of work that you enjoy. Working from home usually means long hours of solitude. There is a strong possibility that you will quit out of boredom if you don’t choose an area of work that you enjoy. Taking little breaks from your work can also do wonders to your mood.

5. Stopping the Learning Process
Working from home means no one to interact with, no one to compete with and no one to exchange ideas with. This may lead to a stagnation of your knowledge base. To avoid this, interact frequently with the people in your field. Keep abreast with the latest developments concerning your field and read more than just the local newspaper. Internet is a great source of information – use it to your advantage.

6. Compromising the Quality

Home based works means there are no benchmarks with which you can compare your work. A strict watch on work quality is needed. You should always be looking for ways to improve the quality of your work.

5 tips that you definitely need to know when you’re starting your search for a work at home job.

1) NEVER, EVER PAY FOR A JOB. Be very careful with this.  Legitimate employers will not ask you for money.  If you are looking to start a business (for example: Mary Kay, Usborne Books, Watkins etc.) you may have to pay for a set up fee, but this is to cover your kit that you will receive to start your own business.  Some companies, however, ask for a start up fee when really all you will be selling is the “opportunity” for someone else to join that same company.

2) DO YOUR RESEARCH. Make sure you research the company everywhere possible.  Check them out on the Better Business Bureau,  the RipOff Report, ask other moms on message boards their experiences and anywhere else you can get some information on the company.  Make sure that you also know what you are buying if you are starting your own business.  Know what your “kit” consists of (if anything).  There are millions of scams on the internet so be exactly sure of what company you are joining.

3) DETERMINE YOUR LIKES AND DISLIKES. If you hate selling things – stay away from direct sales companies.  If you don’t wear makeup – don’t sell cosmetics!  Many people do not consider any of this and jump into the first opportunity that sounds too good to be true.  Find out what you love to do and go from there.   Make a list of all the pros and cons to find out what will suite you the best.    You’ll have a lot easier time making money if you are loving your job!

4) KNOW WHAT YOUR NEW JOB WILL REQUIRE. Many people jump into anything just to work from home and don’t have a clue how much time and effort it will take for them to succeed.  Know what the company requires of you or how many “parties” you’ll have to do in order to make the kind of money that you want.  Know what type of commissions you’ll earn and what it will take to earn the amount you’re looking for.  You may be surprised how hard or easy it is to make the amount you’d like.

5) IT CAN TAKE A LONG TIME TO FIND A JOB. If you’re looking for a “job” instead of an “opportunity”, it can take many months to find one.  Start looking around on the internet as soon as you decide exactly what you’d like to do.  A few legitimate job sites on the internet today are liveops.com, alpineaccess.com and workingsol.com.  Another good place to look for work at home jobs is CraigsList.com.  Be patient and be optimistic!  If you are truly determined to find a work at home job, you will.
