Wouldn’t it be nice to roll out of bed, slip on a robe and slippers and shuffle down the hall to your home office to work? Today over 137 million people world-wide do just that at least part time as more and more companies take advantage of the cost savings that telecommuting programs offer. One of the best places to find these companies is online, but you must beware. While more and more legitimate work-at-home jobs can be found online, so can scams.

Here’s what you need to know and do if you are looking for a real work-at-home job online.

1) Understand that you aren’t going to sign up to work at home. Telecommuting work is found in the same way that traditional work is found and usually involves an application or resume, and interview process.

2) You can’t pay to get hired. Any company that says you can work for it by sending some money is not offering a job. It’s okay to invest in a good work-at-home job database or hiring a professional resume writer, but you should never, ever, ever, pay to get hired. Let me add here that a legitimate company will never need to use your personal bank account to do business either. Never pay money nor use your bank in a work-at-home job.

3) Be open to many job types. Instead of thinking, “I want to sit home and type,” think about all the skills you have that can be used at home. Are you a good researcher? Do you have good phone skills? Are you highly organized? Are you creative? Can you write persuasively? Make a list of all your skills, experiences, talents and hobbies and search for jobs that need those attributes.

4) Learn to do a job that has a high demand for workers. There are certain job types that have many job openings right now such as copywriting, customer service, web and graphic design, medical transcription, writers, and more. If you can’t do any of these jobs, why not learn how? Most can be either self-taught or learned through an online or correspondence course.

5) Look for work where jobs are posted. Most people get in trouble because they look for the wrong types of jobs in the wrong places. Use job search sites not search engines to find work-at-home jobs. Visit reputable work-at-home websites (offer articles, tips and information beyond affiliate programs) to learn about working at home and also to get job leads.

6) Be professional. I can’t believe some of the email I receive from people who want to work at home who tell me they can type and yet their letters have typos and grammatical errors. Or they say they want to work at home, but provide no information on what they are qualified to do. You have one chance to convince a potential employer that you can do the job. The employer doesn’t care about your childcare hassles or illness. She only cares about finding the best person to do the job. All your interactions should focus on what you can do for the employer.

In most businesses, success means showing consistent or growing sales volume to an expanding customer base.  Lead generation refers to finding potential buyers, and is an essential activity for growth.  There are many ways to keep a steady stream of prospects available, each offering specific advantages.

#1 Ask for referrals. There’s nothing wrong with doing this. In fact, customers are often happy to refer you to others, they just need to be reminded to do so. And, if you can create a referral program where your current clients receive a discount or credit for your services, then all the better.

#2 Be professional. If you’re an excellent person to work with, you’ll keep your clients – even if your rates are a bit higher or your timeline a little bit longer than others. The truth is, we place a high value on our business relationships, at least the clients you want to work with do. And if you can build a strong relationship with your clients, you’ll keep them for the long haul. They’ll also talk about you, and word of mouth is a great, and free, marketing tool.

#3 Communicate on a regular basis. You don’t have to have an opt-in list or an email marketing campaign, but if you regularly connect with your clients, you stay in the front of their mind when they have a need or when someone asks them for a recommendation. Here are two approaches to client communication that you can utilize to fit your business. They are:

- Promotional Email – Send your client list an email once a month, or more often if you like, highlighting a promotion. For example, “10% off any orders of $50 or more for the month of April.” 

- Informational Email – Send your client a note when you’re thinking of them. For example, “I saw this article and thought of you.” This helps build a relationship to them and it’s a great way to stay connected.

#4 Get Social! Participate in social networking, blog and be a guest blogger. Generate awareness about you and your services. One new client can turn into many new clients over the course of a year – just through social networking.

#5 Be helpful. Be willing to help and inform others in your community even when there isn’t any apparent reward. Whether you believe in the law of attraction or not, when you give to others, they give back. This doesn’t mean you give away your services; what it means is that you’re willing to help others by providing insight, information and a listening ear when they need it without expecting anything in return.

If your client is trying to resolve an issue and you can help them with your experience, help them. They’ll appreciate it and you never know when they’ll be able to return the favor.

Does Your Website Need a Makeover?

Websites, like any marketing materials and business processes, needs to keep up with the times. Whether that means tweaking your website from time to time to keep it up to date or completely redoing it, is a decision that can only be made by you. Here are some questions to help you decide if it’s time.

1. When was the last time you updated your website design or functionality? If it’s been more than a year since you’ve done anything to your website other than add content, then it’s probably time to at least give your website a few touch-ups.

2. Does your website design still accurately reflect your company personality, brand, vision and mission? Businesses change and grow and you can easily outgrow your website design. If it no longer represents who you are and where you’re going as a business, it’s time for a makeover.

3. Is your website able to accomplish all that you need it to accomplish? Old website platforms may not be able to handle all of the functions and features you’d like to offer your audience. For example, including a opt in box to encourage customers to sign up for your mailing list.  

4. Have you rebranded your business? If you’ve rebranded your business then your website most certainly needs an update.

5. Is your website poised to handle the future? If your website already has a retro look and feel, it may not be ready for what the future has in store. A touch-up now may prevent you from having to do a complete overhaul in the near future.

* Upgrade or fix the navigation. Navigation, or how your users are able to get around on your website, is essential to them staying on your site and revisiting it. If things are difficult to find, you can bet impatient website visitors will not stay. Navigation is an important function and is a good way to update your website.

* Design. When people think of makeover this is what often comes to mind and yes, you can change or update your colors, design, layout, logo, and graphics to give your website a fresh look and feel.

* Search engine optimization. Hopefully you’ve been updating your keywords and SEO tactics as your business grows and your audience changes. Internet users have become significantly savvier when they search and it’s important to keep up with the trends. This is more of a behind-the-scenes makeover and can be handled by a SEO professional or by you or an educated administrative assistant.

* Functions and features. Today’s prospect likes to interact online and that means offering web 2.0 features and functions.  Most often this doesn’t require a complete overhaul but rather adding some user-friendly items to an already existing site. However, if your platform hasn’t been updated in a long time, you may need to upgrade to stay current.

To stay competitive, it’s important to assess your website on a regular basis. Every six months to a year is a good idea to keep things fresh, innovative and interesting to your audience.

As a business owner, you are both the boss and the employee.  Some people can thrive in this type of situation and achieve more than they could in a traditional work environment.  For other people, this situation can spell disaster.  To be a successful home business owner you need to increase your productivity in your business. Every once in awhile you should stop and ask yourself the following questions to ensure that you are staying on track with your business goals.

Are you focused on your business?

It can be easy to lose focus when you work at home, as there will always be other things competing for your attention.  It is difficult to work at home when there are other things that needs to be done also. To combat household distractions, set an hour timer for work followed by a 15 minute break to tend to small household distractions. If the distractions are thwarting your productivity, take your business elsewhere. Mobilize your business and go to a coffee shop or park. With less distractions around you will be able to concentrate more. Remember, it is okay to let the house cleaning wait for a few hours while you work on your business. A clean house can’t pay your bills, but those few hours you put into your business could reap you many financial rewards.

Not only is focusing on business tasks important, but it is important to be focused within your business.  It is easy to get sidetracked with new business ventures and other ideas. It can be hard to spread your time and energy over too many projects. If you find yourself working on many projects, concentrate on the projects that are primary to your business needs. Other projects that are not as tightly woven within your target market can be set aside for the time being. Focus on your business priorities first by write down all your projects and prioritize them by importance.

Are you being productive?

At the end of the day, do you ever feel like you worked all day but accomplished nothing?  Take a look at the tasks you are working on, and whether they are actually important to your success.  If you find yourself getting sidetracked by surfing the web, chatting in forums, or reading blogs, try to schedule time for those activities after your “real work” is done.

New Years Resolutions for Your Business in 2010

We already discussed the importance of setting goals. Now, let’s talk about making realistic New Years Resolutions for your Business in 2010.

It is pretty much a staple that with the coming of each new year, resolutions must follow. We have this innate need to be better and do better. Because of this, when a new year arrives, we want to try harder and plan for success…again. However, what is the point of resolutions if one does not keep them? I say, no point at all!

2010 is special. It is a new year and a new decade. We have an opportunity to grow as business owners and achieve a new kind of success in an ever changing world.

How can a business set resolutions? Simple. Sit down. Take a long hard look at how your business is doing and what areas can use improvement. Set goals. Change. Do. Follow though!

Ten Resolutions for Any Business in 2010

  • Better Customer Service. If a business lacks good customer service, they are doomed to failure. The customer is the most important aspect of any business.
  • Budget. Every business needs a budget. If setting a budget sounds scary or is not something your business has, I encourage you to sit down with an accountant or someone who has money knowledge. Set a realistic budget and resolve to follow through with it. How the money is spent will affect the ability to promote, grow and provide for the business. Have a clear money resolution. Stick to it.
  • Competitive Pricing. When setting prices for services and products make sure they are not the lowest or highest. It is important for the overall market that pricing is competitive. It there are businesses offering lower than reasonable pricing, they are not helping the over all market for the business they represent. It should not be the goal to crush competition. There are many customers out there and plenty of business to go around. Be competitive. However, do not ruin the market.
  • Marketing. There must be a doable plan to get the word out about your product or service. Think about what forms of advertising and PR you will use. Include marketing in the businesses budget.
  • Use the Internet. Having a website and/or blog is a vital ingredient in the technology crazed world we are in. Find a good web designer and create a web presence for your business. Getting on the web will give the business more opportunities for growth. If your business already has a website, consider freshening it up!
  • Stick with One Niche. Focus on what your business offers. When a client sees your product or service, they should have a clear understanding of what you offer and what your company is all about. Stick to what works.
  • Social Networking. Some people say this is a new form of promoting a business. However, I disagree. Social networking has been around since business began. Think about it. Word of mouth has always been a great way to get the word out about a product or service. The only thing that has changed is the method. It is better in today’s world because of the powerful Internet.
  • Plan for Success. Growth should be the goal of all businesses. Think big and dream bigger. Never limit the possibilities. PLAN for success. Do what it takes to make a mark for your business. Keep a positive focus and clear strategies for how you can make success a reality for your business.
  • New Products and Services. Consider adding new products and/or services that are still within the main niche of what your business has to offer. Set your business apart. Also, plan the year for specials. Use holidays and seasons to help create special promotions and freebies with purchases. It is always a good thing when a business has a special promotion. Doing this will keep customers coming back for more.
  • Stay in Touch. Create a customer list. Send them postcards or emails to inform them of current sales. Use lists to stay in touch with customers and help find new ones. Offer them a special discount on their birthday. Be personal. It is always nice to be personal with a customer. It makes them feel special and sets your business apart from others.

New Year. New Decade. New Business.

2010 is here and an opportunity to start a new decade filled with new goals and a strong business plan. Let go of the past and press on to the future. It is a fresh new year and decade filled with opportunities for growth and success in business.

There are certain steps that are important for all businesses. Today, let’s look at goals

Setting Business Goals.

Goal setting in business…actually in many areas of life is vital to success and proper growth. There must be a clear plan and focus so that business owner and client can see a future.

Step by Step.

First, a business plan should be made. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of your business?
  • What do you want to accomplish in the next year, five years, and even decade?
  • What is your main focus?
  • How do you plan to achieve it all?

Once you have clear answers, use them to create a plan and strategy for your business. Be purposeful. Take one step at a time and start small. Set mini goals to get you started with medium and long term goals for a broader focus.

Setting goals and planning your business’s future will not only help your business succeed, it will relive stress and give you something to work towards.

Set the Goals.

It is much easier than you think to set business goals. Below is an example of goals that can be set.

Short Term Goals

  • get a website, logo and brand for my business in 2010
  • work on gaining at least 1 new client a week.

Medium Term Goals.

  • Turn a profit within 3 years.
  • Expand.

Long Term Goals.

  • Double current income by 2015.

This is just an example. When you sit down to focus on what you want for your business it will be different. Also, please note: you must be willing to do the work to accomplish the goals you set. They will not just happen. Put action behind the goals.

Podcasting 101

If you’re not familiar with the term Podcasting,  it is the use of audio or video to broadcast a message.  Though experts disagree on where the term came from (some say it came from a combination of the Apple iPod and the term broadcast, while others say it comes from Public on Demand + Cast), the medium is growing exponentially as a tool businesses use to communicate with customers and potential customers.

Think of it as an audio blog or an audio e-newsletter.  Like both of those tools, podcasts are an excellent and cost effective way to reach your target market in a personal and informative way.  Additionally, podcasts can be distributed through RSS format, which is a subscription service that announces and delivers the podcast to your subscribers like a blog or a newsletter.

One of the reasons for the popularity of podcasts is that users, your customers and your target market, are able to easily access the information and listen to it on their computer, iPod (or other MP3 player), handheld device and even their cell phone.

How podcasting can help your site or blog:

1. Podcasts increase your marketing reach and online visibility. You will expand your target market because different people prefer different mediums. Some customers like to read company information, others prefer videos or live communication and still others like to download your information and listen to it when they have time.  Many podcast users listen to downloaded podcasts on their way to work or while they’re working out.

2. Podcasts can improve your sales and conversion rates. Podcasts are yet another way to reach your customers, and the one-on-one communication provides the kind of personal touch that customers crave.  People are more likely to buy from someone that they feel they have communicated with directly, and podcasts enable you to do just that.

3. Podcasts provide a consistent line of communication with subscribed listeners. It has been proven that regular communication with your customers improves both your overall relationship with them and their buying frequency.  A regularly distributed podcast can strengthen your relationship with your buyers and help to build a community with your customers.

4. Podcasts provide beneficial and value added content, which increases customer loyalty. Podcasts can offer a different kind of content to what you can provide with a blog or an e-newsletter.  This kind of content can be extremely beneficial to your customers.

5. Podcasts allow you to distribute industry news and trends, which sets you apart from your competition and establishes you as a respected leader in your niche or industry. One of the best ways to get repeat purchases and loyal customers is to become the “expert” in your industry.  Once your business is established as the place to go for quality information, services or products, your profits will grow.

6.  Podcasting, or adding audio or video to your website and email messages, enables customers and prospects to access information in a more personal way. You can add video or audio testimonials, quick “how to” segments, and even a special promotional message.  Adding audio or video is a unique way to add a personal touch to your website.

7.  A podcast or an audio file can be used as a giveaway to build your opt-in list. Consider recording either an interview with an industry expert or a seminar or workshop, and then offering the audio file as a free download.  In return, you get their email address for future mailings.

Podcasting can increase profits:

The great thing about podcasting is that you can do it at home with a basic Mac or PC and an inexpensive microphone. Some podcast hosting sites even make it possible to podcast with your cell phone.  You simply register with the service and create your podcasts by recording them when you’re on your cell phone.

Podcasting on a consistent schedule is important when building a community and a wider audience.  In fact, don’t expect your podcast to have a large audience in the beginning.  But with proper promotion, quality content and a regular schedule, your podcast audience will grow.  Many podcast audiences number in the thousands.

Decide, before you get started, how often you will be able to broadcast.  Each podcast will take time to script, rehearse and record.  You are likely to want to commit at least four hours of planning and production time for each podcast.

To determine how long your podcast should be, you’ll want to consider how frequently you’re going to broadcast, what content you’re delivering, and who your audience is.  For example, if you’re doing a daily podcast you would be likely to want to keep it short.  Five to ten minutes is a perfectly acceptable length for a daily.  It is enough time to offer an inspiration, a tip for the day or an insight.  If you’re doing a weekly and you know that your subscribers generally listen to your podcast on their drive to work, then a 20-30 minute podcast would fit perfectly into that time frame.

Great news!  Podcasts can actually be free.  If your computer came with a microphone or you use the cell phone type set-up, then you already have your recording equipment.  All you need is a podcast host and, like blogging hosts, many are offered for free.  Simply use your favorite search engine and you’ll find numerous choices.

Of course, for a few extra dollar s you can find podcast hosts that offer sound editing software, more storage and unlimited bandwidth.  To choose the right podcast host, it really depends on how many podcasts you want to produce per month, how big they will be and what kind of subscriber base you are expecting for your shows.

The name of your podcast is also important.  It not only reflects your business and your brand identity, but it also needs to inspire people to download it, listen to it, and come back for more.  Choose a name for your podcast that matches your content topic.  People generally search for a particular subject when they visit podcast sites, like “meditation”, “marketing”, “investing” etc.

Like any other online content, publicity is all about using the right keywords.  Your podcast can have your company name on it but you should also consider having a secondary name.  Dating the podcasts is also suggested, because it helps subscribers organize them and know what is new content and what is old content.

For customers that download onto their iPod or other MP3 player, they will see a 255 character id tag that scrolls across their screen.  Be sure to include your URL (and possibly your phone number as well) in that title.

Always script your podcast before you record it.  Make sure to outline your point or points first.  What message do you want to get across to your subscribers?  Make sure you are able to address this point accurately and completely in the time that you have allowed.  Make notes of where you want to add inflection.

Podcasts that are without inflection or a range of vocal emphasis are not interesting to listen to.  Add emotion to your voice; if you are excited about your material show it, and if you are discussing something serious or sad, let your voice demonstrate that too.

Don’t forget to plan pauses and breaths into your script and where you’re going to place your advertisements.  Advertisements work best when you can easily transition into them.

For example, “Speaking of making money online, head to our website now and save 10% on our new book 101 Ways to Save Money.”

Sample format outline:

  • Introductory music or commentary
  • Introduce of host(s)
  • Begin topic
  • Few minutes of content
  • Advertisement
  • Another few minutes of content
  • Promotional mention of an upcoming events, episodes, guests, etc.
  • Teaser for next episode
  • Closing music or commentary

Advertising Tips for Podcasting:

Make sure that your audio or video includes an easy to remember phone number, because many people will be listening to your offers while they’re driving or working out.  They won’t be able to simply click through to your website.  That being said, make sure you also include your URL in your call to action so that those that are listening on their computer can immediately visit your site.

Keep your advertisements short. Listeners can easily ”fast forward” and not listen to your advertisements.  If you keep them to 10-15 seconds they won’t make the effort to skip over them.  Additionally, you should transition into them as you’re speaking so that the listeners aren’t  immediately aware that they’re listening to an ad.

Make sure that you keep the ads free of time constraints.  Due to the nature of a podcast, a person can listen to it today or six months from now.  If your advertisements have a “limited time offer” call to action, then you’ll miss out on a lot of potential customers.

Hook your audience with interesting content before you insert your ads. Placing your ads in the beginning of your podcast can cause some listeners to tune out; however, if you’ve already hooked them with interesting information, they’ll listen to a quick plug to hear the rest of your information.

Content:

Like any online tool, content is king.  In your podcast you absolutely must provide content that offers a benefit to your customers and target market.  A podcast that is simply an advertisement for your services may get listened to once but it won’t be revisited, and it won’t be forwarded to friends, family and associates.  However, a podcast that entertains and informs will grow and build your sales and your online presence.

Make sure that the content that you offer via your podcast differs from the content that you offer via your blog, e-zine or on your website.

Marketing your podcast:

The best way to increase the number of listeners you have is to tell everyone about your new podcast.  If you have an e-zine, then promote, and link to, your podcast in your e-zine.  If you have a blog, promote and link to your podcast there.  Include a signature “visit my podcast” or “listen here” in every email.  And of course, don’t forget to promote your podcast on your website!  Place a link to your podcast on your website, with an image, somewhere between 100×100 and 250×250, with an intriguing headline that makes the viewer want to listen.

Linking to and from favorite podcasts or other relevant podcasts is also a great way to increase your audience.  And don’t worry if the number of listeners you have is small in the beginning.  Podcasts are a medium and, like e-zines and blogs, tend to grow as word gets out.  The key is to get listeners “hooked” on your podcast so that they’re listening to every podcast regularly and talking to their friends and associates about it.  The best way to get them hooked is to provide great content.

Podcasting  tips and ideas

  • Make sure you speak in a strong voice and add inflection.  If you sound like you’re uncertain about what you’re saying, your listeners will think so too.
  • Make sure that your broadcasting frequency is consistent.  You want people to make listening to your podcast a habit.
  • Offer variety.  Include different guests and formats if possible.  This will keep listeners intrigued and engaged.
  • Make sure that your podcast content is different from your blog content, articles and e-zine content.  Chances are that listeners will explore all of your content, and if it is redundant they will lose interest.
  • Focus on content, not sales pitches.  Your listeners will readily listen if you’re providing content that offers them a benefit.  However, if it’s merely a sales pitch you’ll lose them immediately.
  • Plan on Podcasting for the long haul.  Podcasting is a medium that builds an audience over time and a “test run” won’t give you the results you’re looking for.
  • Don’t read directly from your script.  Practice it a few times so that you know what you’re going to say and then let the podcast recording flow naturally.
  • Invite others to contribute to your podcast by calling in, speaking, or contributing topic ideas.
  • Include music at the beginning and end, and use the same music each time so that your audience begins to identify the music with your podcast.
  • Give each podcast a headline or title.  Make sure that it offers your audience a benefit such as “10 Tips to Lifelong Happiness.”
  • Podcasting is a very personal medium.  Talk to your audience like you’re talking to a friend, as if you’re having a one-on-one conversation.
  • Podcasting, like any marketing tool, needs to be tested and evaluated from time to time to make sure that you’re getting optimal exposure.  Track downloads and test headlines for open rates.  Track click through rates by sending audiences to specific web pages.  Many audio/podcasting  services give you important statistics on downloads, play time and listens to completion.  This makes it easy to know if people are listening and enables you to make quick changes to meet what your audience demands.
  • If you’re uneasy writing a podcast or audio script, you can outsource the project by hiring a freelance writer to create your script.  Remember to personalize the script when you make your recording.
  • Before you begin Podcasting, research your competition’s podcasts or audio files.  Find out what they do that you can do better and differently.
  • Before you begin Podcasting, visit and listen to numerous successful podcasts inside and outside of your industry.  What makes the good ones good?  What can you take away from the successful podcasts and make your own?

Adding a podcast to your marketing mix and to your website is a valuable and economical marketing tool that can bring you fantastic results.  You’ll grow your target audience, build a community around your brand, product, or service, and – best of all – you’ll help people learn more.  Podcasts are a win-win for both you and your customer.

SEO and Active Links

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an art. If you own a website or blog and want it to grow and be a great site with lots of traffic, SEO must become a regular part of y our life. Webmasters, successful ones anyway, never stop optimizing their sites. There is always something that can be tweaked or new idea surfacing to help site owners have better SEO.

Active Link Factor and SEO

You must be very careful how many outgoing active links (that are not a part of your actual domain) on your site. If you have too many, search engines will think you are a link farm and punish you for it. If you research and look for successful, high ranking and high traffic sites, you will see that they are not an ocean of outgoing links…especially on their main page.

If you have a lot of resource links, consider just putting them up as a reference and not making them active. That way visitors can still access the resource, but you are not hurting your SEO with a sea of active links.

Link Exchanges should be made only with good ranking sites and or quality niche sites. Be very picky. Also, make a separate page for link exchanges. Better yet, place link exchanges around your internal pages in places they will be most appreciated by visitors and encourage the same for those you exchange with. Remember, a quality link coming IN does not necessarily need to e a high ranking page. A page within your NICHE is the best.

Good SEO requires commitment and regular attention. Take the time to optimize your site regularly and you will reap the benefits for years to come.
