Search Engine Optimization Made Simple

By: Anthony Samuel

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is one of those fancy terms that tech people throw around to make themselves seem smarter than you. While it’s true that the deepest intricacies of SEO are mind-bogglingly complex, few if any human beings actually understand them. The basic tenants of SEO, however, are fairly straightforward, so you probably don’t need to pay an SEO Specialist to optimize your site. You can do it yourself!

What is Search Engine Optimization?

SEO is a strategy for getting your web site to rank highly in search engine results. The crudest element is keyword usage. Determine what words potential customers are likely to search for on Google, Yahoo!, and MSN, and incorporate those words into the text of your pages as frequently as possible – within limits. Make sure that each keyword doesn’t account for more than 4.5 percent of your entire text, or search engines might think that you’re trying to cheat, and classify your page as spam. A good keyword density target is 3-4 percent. Bolding, italicizing, and using your keywords in title headings and hyperlinks can also be helpful.

Search engines rank pages based on their usefulness, or at least, their best guesses as to a site’s usefulness. In addition to keyword usage, search engines estimate a site’s merit by the number (and quality) of other sites that link to it. Knowing this, you should try to get as many other sites as possible to link to yours. Many webmasters will trade links with you, but don’t expect a big league blog to simply give you a link. Establish your web presence, build a useful site, and it’s much easier to find link partners. After all, other webmasters want to link to sites that their visitors will find useful.

One strategy for increasing the number of sites linking to yours is to become a frequent poster on other people’s blogs. Don’t spam the sites – add credible, worthwhile comments to existing posts. Most blogs allow you to input your site’s URL, and your name is then hyperlinked to your site. While these aren’t official links from another site to yours, search engines don’t distinguish between links posted by site administrators, and links posted by bloggers.

Common SEO Mistakes to Avoid

First, it is important that your page has plenty of text. Some web designers insist on using graphical images of text, but this data is indecipherable to search engines. You need to have actual text using keywords that web surfers are likely to search for. Flash animations and other fanciful gimmicks don’t help your SEO case, and should be avoided whenever possible.

Secondly, try to keep your site programming as simple as possible. You can do amazing things with PHP and MySQL, but if you get carried away, search engines have a hard time reading your pages. If at all possible, try to stick to generic old .html page extensions.

Most important of all, don’t be fooled by charlatans in the SEO “industry.” For the most part, they are conmen. A typical ploy is to promise you thousands of sites linking to yours. These so-called “link farms” are well known to the major search engines, who consider any sites linked from them to be spam.

The #1 Rule of SEO – Make Your Site Useful
Textual tricks and creative link sharing strategies can only take you so far. The truth is that a legitimately useful site is most likely to do well in search engine placement. As they say, content is king. So the best way to ensure a higher ranking among Google, Yahoo!, and MSN is rather low tech – create good content that people actually want to read, and update it frequently. In no time, links will start coming your way, and you will move your way up the search engine page ranks.

Introduction to SQL

By: Jim Pretin

For those of you who have just started designing web sites, you are probably well versed in the basics of the HTML programming language. HTML is an easy language to learn. Most beginning web designers are self-taught. They learn HTML through simple online tutorials. HTML, however, is not the only language of cyberspace. There is a lot more to web programming than meets the eye.

HTML only takes care of the front end. There are many other languages and specifications that handle the back end. Javascript, Visual Basic, PHP and a host of other programming languages make a web site come to life. One such important and valuable language is Standard Query Language (SQL), which is the focus of this article.

SQL is the primary language for accessing and interacting with databases running on the back end of a web site. Whenever you use a website to access information, you are using SQL to extract the information you want from the database where the information is stored. SQL works with almost all database programs, such as MS Access, DB2, Informix, MS SQL Server, Oracle, and Sybase.

Databases generally consist of tables. Tables consist of records. Each record in a table contains certain information, separated by columns. For example, a dating website where people can post their profiles would probably consist of a table holding a record of each person who has a membership. In each record, there would be different columns containing information about that particular person. There would likely be a column for height, weight, age, marital status, and other personal information.

When someone using that dating website searches for a profile that matches certain criteria that they are looking for in a potential mate, their query is converted into an SQL statement. That SQL statement interacts with the database, pulls out the profiles that match the search criteria, and then returns the search results to the user. SQL statements consist of commands such as Select, Update, Insert, and Delete.

Here is an example of an SQL statement:

SELECT Name,Height,Weight from BODY;

This statement will retrieve all of the data from the Name, Height, and Weight columns contained within the table called Body. SQL is not case sensitive, but the example listed above uses caps to make the statement easier to read. SQL is used not only to find certain things within a table, but to add and remove data as well.

SQL is perhaps the most important programming language of the web. After all, the primary reason why we use the internet is to obtain information about a certain topic. Almost all websites have a database where this information is stored, and SQL enables us to find what we are looking for. All web designers need to understand how to create a simple database and how to create simple SQL statements to make that database accessible to the user. Since the syntax of the language is not complicated, it is easy to learn SQL using online tutorials. If you prefer, you can enroll in SQL courses offline at a local college or computer programming institute. Either way, you need to learn SQL because it is perhaps the most vital programming language of the world wide web.

6 Key Ways to Promote your Ezine and Grow your List

By: Jan Marie Dore

If you publish a regular newsletter, you know that it’s a great way to keep in touch and develop relationships with clients and prospects. My clients tell me that once they have started sending out an ezine, one of their biggest challenges is how to grow their list.

A large list can keep your business consistently full with clients. Here are six key ways to promote your ezine and build your subscriber base:

1. Send a Sample Copy
Send a sample copy to everyone in your database – clients, colleagues, and friends. Send out your first, or best, issue announcing your new ezine, and invite them to sign up. Due to SPAM regulations, it’s not a good idea to sign anyone up without their permission.

2. Sign-up Form
Have a prominent sign-up form near the top of your home page, and have a sign-up box on every page of your web site. People can enter into your web site at any page, so you want to capture them no matter where they land.

3. Signature Line
Promote your ezine in your signature line. Have a simple description of your newsletter and the benefit to readers in the email signature line at the bottom of all your emails. Include a *call to action* to subscribe to your ezine with a hot link that allows people to sign up directly.

4. Archive Back Issues
Offer a sample issue, or archive back issues at your web site. Many people want to see what they’ll be getting before they sign up. They want to see your writing style and to know there will be value to them in subscribing. You might also have a sample issue available by autoresponder.

5. Tell a Friend
Encourage people to pass the word. Have a note in your ezine letting your readers know that you’re building your subscriber list. Ask them to pass it along to friends and colleagues who might be interested in your topic. Provide an easy way for people who receive your ezine this way to sign up.

6. Business Cards
Tell people about your ezine on the front or back of your business cards. Let them know why and how they should subscribe. That way, everyone you meet can be potential subscriber.

If you’re not currently doing all of the above to promote your ezine, commit to doing at least one thing this week to expand your subscriber base and the reach of your newsletter.

What is XQuery?

By: Jim Pretin

The advent of wireless internet access has made web design a very complicated matter. Previously, all web browsers were created equal. HTML was the only language used to create web sites, and it was only possible to go online with a desktop PC.

Since the turn of the century, cyberspace has changed. It is now possible to surf the world wide web using a wide variety of wireless gadgets, such as cell phones, palm tops, laptops, computer screens in automobiles, etc. As a result, new programming languages and specifications that are more versatile than HTML have evolved to create websites that can be displayed on the new web browsers utilized by these various devices.

Languages such as XML, XHTML, XSL, and a host of other programming innovations were developed because web sites coded in basic HTML were not being displayed properly on the browsers installed on all these neat gadgets. XML is a language that enables data to be displayed across all platforms because XML is a simple text file that merely defines data, it does not tell the web browser how to display the data. XSL and XHTML were created so that XML could be transformed into a web page.

Now that you have a basic understanding of how and why programming has changed, you are ready for a brief introduction to the main topic of this article, XQuery. XQuery was invented so that there was a way to query data stored in an XML document, much the same way SQL is used to query a database.

XQuery uses simple functions to query a document. An XQuery function looks a little like a javascript function in that it uses parentheses containing an element that is to be the object of the function. With XQuery, the element in parentheses is typically the name of the document or file to be queried. To find what it is looking for within that file, XQuery narrows its search by using path expressions that look a lot like the path for an ordinary file stored on your computer, with the various subsets of data within the XML file separated by backslashes. The predicate is the final component of an XQuery function. The predicate tells the function exactly what information, data, or range of data within a particular subset is to be extracted and returned to the user.

For example, an XML file for a dating website would contain a list of men and women who have posted their profiles on the website. Some of the people in the XML file might be classified as single, while others might classified as divorced. The XML file would also contain the age of each man and woman. If a woman were to visit that dating website and perform a search for profiles of only single men who are over the age of 30, that search request would be converted into an XQuery function that would contain a path that would tell the function to search through the list of men who are classified as single, and the predicate would instruct the function to return only the profiles of the single men who are older than 30.

Learning how to use XML, XHTML, and XQuery is of critical importance to every web designer or programmer. There are now so many ways to connect to the internet using computers that run on different platforms that are no longer compatible with many elements of the HTML programming language. Web designers need to be conscious of this and start designing web sites that utilize XML and XQuery.

Why Writing Articles Works Like a Traffic Magnet

By: Kurt Naulaerts

Article Marketing is hot. Every single day webmasters and program owners write and submit thousands of articles on any subject you can think of. The reason for this is that an article is content. And content is king. Before you start to think that this is another SEO technique that may or may not work depending on the current algorithms of the search engines, think about it.

EVERYTHING on the internet is CONTENT.

The internet is a veritable treasure trove of information. Good, bad, valuable or not, the internet is all about providing information to people. That is why smart internet marketers know that people want information from their websites, not just SEO enriched pages of advertising.

The loopholes that search engine optimizers have been trying to use for high ranking in the search engine has created a plethora of sites that boast high keyword ratios, thousands of irrelevant hyperlinks and sometimes even redirection. These redirected websites try to create an optimized web page that the search engines will rank high but actually redirect the viewer to a less search engine friendly site.

Well, the search engines caught on. The websites that were getting the highest placements were not always providing quality information or useful content. In fact, they not only lowered the ranking of these sites. They even removed them from the listings completely.

This sent a shock wave through the internet community and smart marketers realized that there is only one sure way to convince the search engines that they were meant to be at the top: Quality Content. And a quality way to provide content is through articles.

Not only do the search engines love content and articles, but visitors do too. By providing visitors with useful information and relevant links to other sites, they come back again and again! And that is not the only benefit.

Because website owners are now hungry for content, there is a huge market for informative articles that other website owners can use on their sites. By offering information to these sites in exchange for a hyperlink to your website, you get even more exposure, both to search engines AND customers.

So, if you want an easy way to provide content then start writing articles. Ask yourself what kind of program you are promoting. What niche market does it belong to? What keywords are people searching for in the search engines to find your program?

If you have answered these questions then you are well on your way. Next, describe the topics of your program. Use your own knowledge. Search for info in the search engines. Explore your hard drive. Maybe you will find an ebook you had forgotten about.

Are you ready to start writing?

The headline determines for a great deal whether someone is going to read your article. How to, Discover, Why, X ways to, are fine starting points.

In the title and first paragraph mention your keyword. Use this keyword a few times in the rest of the article. Do not advertise in your article! Do not mention links or URLs! An article is meant to be informative. It is not a sales letter.

And still the main reason why people write articles is to promote something. Surprise: you have a resource box! When you submit an article you may (MUST!!) include a resource box. This is your ad! You have about 5 lines to mention your name, a link to your site and to be creative in order to attract visitors.

Do you see the value of writing articles?

5 Ways To Improve Your Adsense Earnings

By: Dan Farrell

If webmasters want to monetize their websites, the great way to do it is through Adsense. There are lots of webmasters struggling hard to earn some money through their sites. But then some of the ‘geniuses ‘ of them are enjoying hundreds of dollars a day from Adsense ads on their websites. What makes these webmasters different from the other kind is that they are different and they think out of the box.

The ones who have been there and done it have quite some useful tips to help those who would want to venture into this field. Some of these tips have boosted earnings and is continuously doing so.

5 ways to improve your Google Adsense earnings

1. Concentrating on one format of Adsense ad. The one format that worked well for the majority is the Large Rectangle (336X280). This same format have the tendency to result in higher CTR, or the click-through rates. Why choose this format out of the many you can use? Basically because the ads will look like normal web links, and people, being used to clicking on them, click these types of links. They may or may not know they are clicking on your Adsense but as long as there are clicks, then it will all be for your advantage.

2. Create a custom palette for your ads. Choose a color that will go well with the background of your site. If your site has a white background, try to use white as the color of your ad border and background. The idea to patterning the colors is to make the Adsense look like it is part of the web pages. Again, This will result to more clicks from people visiting your site.

3. Remove the Adsense from the bottom pages of your site and put them at the top.
Do not try to hide your Adsense. Put them in the place where people can see them quickly. You will be amazed how the difference between Adsense locations can make when you see your earnings.

4. Maintain links to relevant websites.
If you think some sites are better off than the others, put your ads there and try to maintain and manage them. If there is already lots of Adsense put into that certain site, put yours on top of all of them. That way the visitor will see your ads first upon browsing into that site.

5. Try to automate the insertion of your Adsense code into the webpages using SSI (or server side included). Ask your web administrator if your server supports SSI or not. How do you do it? Just save your Adsense code in a text file, save it as ‘adsense text ‘, and upload it to the root directory of the web server. Then using SSI, call the code on other pages. This tip is a time saver especially for those who are using automatic page generators to generate pages on their website.

These are some of the tips that have worked well for some who want to generate hundreds and even thousands on their websites. It is important to know though that ads are displayed because it fits the interest of the people viewing them. Focusing on a specific topic should be your primary purpose as the targeted visitor will be more interested in clicking on the adsense ads.

Note also that there are many other Adsense sharing the same topic as you. It is best to think of making a good page that will be somewhat different and unique than the ones already done. Every click through that visitors make is money for you so make every click count by making your Adsense something that people will definitely click on.

Tips given by those who have boosted their earnings are just guidelines they want to share with others. If they have somehow worked wonders to some, maybe it can work wonders for you too.

Finally, remember that your adsense revenue will depend not only on the above tips but how much targeted traffic you send to the page. Traffic that isn’t targeted to the page’s theme will result in a low click through rate. Always keep the visitor in mind when you create a web page with or without adsense.

How To Use Forums To Promote Your Website

By: James Woolley

Forums are a tried and tested way of getting free traffic to your website. By posting on forums that allow sig files (those messages that appear below each post) you can indirectly advertise your website or affiliate program every time you post a comment. It sounds pretty straight forward, but a lot of people are still failing to make best use of this method of promotion. In this article I discuss exactly what to do and what not to do when posting on forums.

The first thing you should do is to find the most popular forums in your particular niche. Start by doing a search on your favored search engines for relevant forums, and then read a few posts and see if they allow sig files. If they do, jot down the url of each forum, until you have a nice list of suitable forums. Then I recommend going to alexa.com and typing each forum’s website address into the traffic ranking box and seeing how much traffic each forum gets. Ideally you want as low a number as possible for it’s ranking, and as a rule I generally tend to favor forums that have a ranking of 50,000 or lower. This ensures you don’t waste your time posting on forums that hardly anyone is visiting.

Once you have your list of forums you can start registering for them and creating your own sig files. This is where SEO becomes a factor, because not only should you create links that contain your main keywords that you want to rank highly for, but you should also vary them slightly so the search engines don’t think that you are simply buying links, because they all use the same anchor text.

Now you can begin posting some messages. Your ultimate objective of posting on forums is to get people to click on your sig file and visit your site, however there is a right way and a wrong way of doing this.

The wrong way is by spamming forums and posting endless worthless comments that don’t add anything to the topics being discussed. The end result of all this is that other readers of the forum will soon suss you out and regard you as a forum spammer and so will have no interest in clicking on your sig files and visiting your site.

The right way to get the most people you can to click on your sig file, without spamming forums, is to brand yourself as an expert in your particular niche. By bearing this in mind when posting each individual message you will start to become respected and people will naturally want to find out more about you and your website. How will they find out this information? Through your sig file of course.

There’s a few other things you can do to maximise your click-thrus from sig files.

Firstly, if you are posting on forums for any length of time, you should change the wording of your sig file every so often. People get bored with seeing the same sig file over and over again, and tend to gloss over it after a while, so it’s important to spice it up every so often (while keeping it keyword rich of course).

Secondly, on every forum you will generally find one or more epic threads, ie those threads that have simply taken off, with several pages of posts, each of which has been viewed hundreds, if not thousands of times. These are the kinds of threads that you should try and post a comment or two on for maximum exposure.

In addition you should also try and start your own epic threads. By being the first person to post on one of these threads your sig file could be seen thousands of times by other readers of the forum. The best ways of doing this are by either starting controversial topics that people will be begging to add their own opinions to, or by starting an open-ended discussion that could lead to many additional topics being discussed, all on the same thread. Either way your initial post containing your sig file could potentially get exposed to thousands of readers.

If you follow the basic guidelines outlined in this article you should create a steady stream of traffic to your website just from forums alone. Combine this promotional method with any of the other numerous traffic-generating methods, and you will soon have a high traffic website on your hands.

Want Return Visitors To Your Site? Invite Them Back!

By: Charlene Polanosky

You just launched the most amazing web site you could have imagined, you’ve let everyone you know all about it, and you submitted it to the search engines – now what? Ultimately, you want your visitors to come by, look around, purchase a product or call you for a service. But you also want them to come back and do it all over again. Here are few tips to help bring back visitors over and over.

1. Content is key. Fresh, interesting content, that is. Dedicate an area on your home page that you can use to alert visitors of something new on the site, whether it is news, a product, a promotion or what not.

2. Give them a reason to come back. Provide a tool, resource, or product that visitors will want to get from you. Make it easy for them to get to it as well. Don’t hide resources three-layers down or ask for a ridiculous amount of personal information first.

3. Invite them to bookmark your site.
If your site is on their list of favorite sites, people are more likely to come back.

4. Personally invite them back! Add a Subscribe button to your site. Use an e-mail marketing tool like Constant Contact to build your mailing list. You can send subscribers email newsletters, product offers, announcements, and other site updates on a regular basis. As long as you don’t over do it, this can really help you keep your site in front of your customers.

By: Collier Harper

Are you tired of hitting the clock everyday for money? You get up early every morning, fight traffic, and listen to a bunch of annoying people every day who don’t give a damn about you. Do you have to endure your bosses’ bad jokes, and stomach your co workers stupid comments, all the while listening to a bunch of other people who are far less intelligent then you? Do you have to then fight traffic all the way back home until you are too tired to spend times with your children, friends, or spouse? The truth is that you don’t have to. If you are reading this for leisure then stop now. This article was not written for the casual reader. It was written for people who want to get out of the situation that they are in and start making something of themselves. If you want to improve your life greatly then proceed.

If you are the average working Joe or Jane, but possess more than average working drive or intelligence, then maybe you should start your own home business. Easier said than done right? Billions of dollars are made every week in the Sports shoe industry every week on Ebay. Get in there and grab some of the money by signing up for an account. Once you have an Ebay account you need to sign up as a seller. Having an Ebay account is always an easy way to find buyers for not only Air Jordan shoes, but anything. Once your account is set up you should post items for sale regularly. You need to take pictures of the shoes your selling. It’s best if you use a digital camera. Do not just find pictures on the internet and use them in your auctions. Your auction might get canceled and Ebay may go so far as to suspend your account. If you sell two pairs of shoes a day you will be making at least $100 extra dollars every day. It only takes 5 minutes to set up an Ebay auction. It’s easy to see how the reward is far greater then the work you have to put in on Ebay.

Ebay is one way to sell things but you need alternate means. Never depend on one medium. Another medium just as powerful as Ebay is Craigslist.org. Craigslist is the largest online classifieds site in the world. The best thing about Craigslist is that it is free to post ads. You can post ads for just about anything. It’s really easy to post an ad in Craigslist. You go to the “For Sale” section. Click on the clothing section. In the upper right hand corner they will be a post button. Click on it and follow the instructions. Once you’ve completed your post you will have to go to your email and confirm the ad. Just go to your email, find the email from Craigslist and click on the link. It’s that simple. You will be getting emails from interested customers in no time.

Save every email that you get from Craigslist and Ebay. Those emails are gold. They are all potential customers. By saving them you are building a mailing list. Email the people whose addresses you have collected once a week with new shoes you have for sale. You will be surprised how many dollars you can generate out of a simple email.
Just remember that through email, Craigslist, and EBay success is only a matter of time off. Those are some of the most powerful weapons in internet marketing today. Just take your time and be diligent. You will reap the rewards of success if you follow the steps outlined in this paper.

How To Make Serious Money With Affiliate Programs

By: Kurt Naulaerts

Time and time again people fail to make money online. Online marketing seems to be an easy way to earn an income. So they join a program, start promoting but nothing really happens. And then they quit. Let us take a closer look at some strategies to make good money with affiliate programs.

Promoting an affiliate program has many advantages. You do not have to create a product. You also do not have to worry about customer service issues. All you do is promote the affiliate program and get a generous percentage of the product sales you generate. In other words it is a perfect opportunity to start your online career.

Two Affiliate Marketing Strategies You Should Follow

1. You can make a choice of thousands of programs as an affiliate marketer. However I firmly believe that the best promotion is based on your own experience. It is simple. Suppose you do not like fruit and you do not see any reason why you should eat it. Then how are you going to persuade your children that they need to eat fruit to get some vital nutrients?

Do not start to promote 15 programs at once. Start with one that you use yourself and that you love. Then you will be able to put some heart and soul in your advertising. Your potential customers will feel that and your sales will boost.

2. You must have your own website. You do not have any control over your affiliate site. So people will visit your site and you do not even know. Not very smart. Suppose your sales letter has a high conversion rate: for every 100 visitors 5 will buy your product. What about the other 95? If you know that sometimes people need seven reminders before they buy then you must agree that you need a follow up system in place. That is why you should create a landing page. You have seen these. It is a short page you create with the sole intention to capture the name and email address of your visitors. And then you are able to follow up with the other 95 and multiply your sales! What is even more important is that at the same time you are building your own opt in list! Do not underestimate the value of your list. For example twice a month you can send them an endorsement about a new product you promote. Once you have a responsive list you can make money by sending one email!

I have explained only two strategies. But when you apply them in your business you will boost your sales. Guaranteed. So do yourself a favour, do not wait and start today.
